I was out earlier this evening so recorded it and have just finished watching (11:15) and have also just  read the variety of comments above with interest.

Can anyone name a film that was absolutely true to the book on which it was based?

My views, for what they are worth!

It was entertaining. How often can you say that?

It was devoid of any adverts for sofas.

What more do you want?

Gareth

I believe it was fine for a one and a half hour programme. The original BBC series was better but that was around 6 hours and I am sure they also missed out quite a lot in that one(I do own the book of course). As Kevin says, name a film that hasn't missed something out. 'The Lord of the Rings' was nine hours and missed out whole chapters and characters. e.g. - What happened to Tom Bombadill? (Although I have to say I thought it was very good and exactly as I saw it in my imagination, even the characters looked like they did in my thoughts)

The answer to this is - don't watch TV if you are not prepared to compromise, always read the book, which is always better anyway!!!

Oh My. The old timers disease is getting worse.

Sorry about that Gareth

Next thing is, I will loose my 'Shift key' and start typing all in capitals and the eyes will go so I need a larger font (in pink or purple of course).

Where is my heating allowance?

Probably not the best adaptation, but lovely viewing for a snowy Tuesday evening. Got a little over excited when I spotted the Agni house. For a short while I felt my favourite time of day in Greece, as the sun is starting to go down and everywhere is golden. Aaaaahhh roll on June.

I thought the humour of the book came across well and liked its quirkiness, which was complimented by the music. Excellent casting all round.

As has been said, difficult, if not impossible, to get the atmosphere of the whole book into 90 minutes but I thought they did a good job.

Re the locations, one of them was in Kontokali, just after where the dual carriageway ends going North and the others have already been mentioned such as Yialaskari etc.

Thanks to Chris for putting it on the DVD for me!

Regards.

I think the problem is, for those of us who have read the book (and I've been re-reading it for the past 40 years!)  we already have our own preconceived ideas of what the characters look and sound like and they will never exactly match those in the adaptations (who of us sat there thinking we could do it better?)

As I said last night, Imelda Staunton was perfect as Mother, but Margo was completely wrong (in the book didn't she struggle with her weight, as well as acne?)

But hey - it was still what we needed on a dark snowy night in December...roll on the summer!

Hi one and all,

I have it recorded and have still to watch it.  I am not a book reader so cannot compare.  I will just be glad to see sunny Corfu again.
