Coming to Corfu April 16th for 2 weeks (1st time) and think we've made a mistake as apparently it won't be warm and the water is described as being icy, at least on the NW side. True? Wanted to stay in Liapades, but no-one responded to our queries for accommodation. Have had 2 replies for Paleokastritsa and was told that it is dead there at night, although the lady I spoke to seemed very friendly so it is an option as she quoted a price of 25 euros a night. We both love to walk and swim especially, and hearing the water is icy cold made me want to return to Menorca but not possible. Friends have been to Kalami and said they thought the water seemed warmer there. I don't expect it to be really warm in April but any info on that would be much appreciated, also can anyone recommend any reasonably priced accommodation in Kalami or would they suggest somewhere else to stay? A lot to answer, sorry.

The east coast is usually warmer than the west because it is a channel rather than open sea.
Personally I would choose a village rather than a resort as more life in low season, and more local life too- look at Kassiopi or Benitses would be my advice.
The island will be reasonably full when you arrive- on Easter Monday- but the Greek tourists will soon go home, so even nicer to be in a village. Good swimming (not sandy) in either villages mentioned, good walks also, and with Benitses, easy access to Corfu Town.

Turning back to Liapades, the accommodations are near the coast and separate from the village which is more inland (1km gentle uphil). The only accommodation I have stayed in was The Cricketers Taverna/Liapades Beach Hotel which I would recommend. However whilst the walking in this area is very good (despite the steep climbs in places) the sea in April will be chilly but then it depends what you are used to.

The main holiday season starts in May so all the resorts are likely to be quiet in April. Much as I love Kalami and hate to put anyone off going there, the shops & tavernas there are unlikely to be open until May so you probably are better off in Kassiopi for the east coast, Acharavi for the north coast or perhaps Pelekas to be near the west coast. If you still want to look at Kalami, perhaps for a future visit, the following are based in the resort:
The A & A has some apartments for private let but most of their accommodation is contracted to a tour operator so they may not open until May. I should also probably mention that you are unlikely to find accommodation in Kalami at the same price as you have been offered in Paleo.

Sometimes you have to chase the warmer water earlier in the season, it all depends on the currents and prevailing winds, and the weather of course
Even in early June it can be cold in places. We stayed in Kalami right at the beginning of June some years ago and the water was like a warm bath, at Kassiopi it was freezing, but on the North coast it was warm again
If you have a car then I would suggest you tour round a bit and find the warm water, there will be some I promise
As to where to stay, Acharavi and Kassiopi will both have places open, tavernas and supermarkets
I am sorry I cannot give advice for other areas except Corfu Town which as always, will be teeming with local life

Hi Goldfinch, yes I think you are probably going too early for the coast but how about staying in Corfu town for some of the time, it's a great place for wondering in the old streets and I'm sure there will be plenty of places to eat. The hotel Cavalieri looks good and the one that has just been revamped and looks over the new bit of port, perhaps someone reading this post will know its name. We stayed in Liapades last September at the Liapades Beach Hotel which we loved but it was quite quiet even then. My choice would be the town and maybe Kassiopi which people have suggested. Good luck with your search. I don't think Liapades Beach opens until April.

Sorry for the last comment Goldfinch I misread and thought you were going in March so maybe try Liapades as his prices are excellent, 60 euros per room [not per person] for dinner bed and breakfast [anything you want including eggs bacon sausage etc.]

Thank you all so much for your comments and suggestions! Really appreciate it :-) Have actually had two offers of accommodation in Paleokastritsa for 25 euros a night, so maybe go there and just travel by bus to visit other places? There will be buses...yes? Maybe hire a car. 25 euros seems almost too good to turn down. Have been on here a long time today looking for reasonably priced places to stay at the places suggested but not found anything. Maybe I should try some of the sites suggested from you all. Regarding the water, am quite tough really as the UK sea is freezing as we all know! I don't drive but my partner drove in Crete, and I found it a hair-raising experience just being a passenger. Greek drivers!!!

Driving on Crete is hair raising as a passenger but it is nothing like that in Corfu!!!
To start with Crete has that huge almost motorway road running across the north coast and it has mountain roads everywhere!!
I always liken driving in Corfu to driving here in rural Gloucestershire, hilly yes, on occasions steep, potholes, but apart from being on the wrong side of the road, nothing to really alarm
Think the bus service to and from Paleo will be a bit restricted on the winter schedule but there will be buses to take the locals into Corfu Town and back at the very least , even if they are few and far between
