I would actually recommend a place close to Corfu town, and why not Benitses. It used to have a bad reputation but this "fishing village" has picked up since. There are some very good tavernas (a lot of local Greeks come here) and some bars, a lovely stretch of beach with crystal clear water and good service, a fantastic newly built marina, really nice service minded locals, supermarkets... the list is long. We have a village house 5 km from here and this is one of our favourite places during the summer. The bus service in to town is really good, buses every half hour, 30 mins ride with fantastic scenery along the way. Corfu town can't be missed, best place!

Tina I agree with your comments on the Tavernas, Paxinos is really lovely but the beach?? Must be the worst beach I have visited, very narrow and just not nice! Went through the village this week and they are still sorting the marina out.

still love Agios Gordios for the beach but two young English guys staying with me now were really put off by all the souvenir shops and 'English' bar signs.
Benitses as a centre is not a bad idea- and the beachh is actually quite good as long as you are not looking for long sandy stretch- a short stroll out in either direction will find you aquiet cove.
Incidentally said young men walked from Benitses to Agios Gordios and back- and said it was a fantastic day- worth thinking about- but not in high season's sun

I second Midleton with Messonghi, loads of tavernas and nice bars but not too busy lovely people and the beach always has sunbeds available and its a good location to explore the island :-)

Agree with you Viv, can only think of Mikes bar by the bus stop, all the rest are Greek. Saw Mike and Sue on Monday, he was full of a cold, Man flu, and she had broken her ankle!

Nigel, it all depends what type of beach one likes, the Benitses coves are small, I admit, with pebbles. The one by the marina is nice, facilities are good, there are beach beds and umbrellas, a shower and a changing hut and the couple looking after it are great. The water is very clear and good for swimming. I love strolling along the marina and the view towards Corfu town and Canoni peninsula is lovely and the sea is turquise green, mirroring the lush vegetation. It doesn't look much driving past it but actually being there is different, and it's very close to the village centre with plenty of choice for lunch, coffee, ice cream etc.
