Hi everyone
This is our first post so apologies for any mistakes. We are driving down to mainland greece(methoni) next month in our vw camper, we have booked our place on the ancora/patras ferry but are contemplating how we get down to italy, should we drive through france or go the belgium route? We are allowing 2 or 3 days to get to ferry and want to try and avoid costly tolls etc, also as we are based in Essex perhaps we should go to Harwich instead of Dover. Any advice is greatly appreciated, many thanKS in advance.

Hi Simon and Claire - send us a picture please!!! We have driven to Corfu seven times in our 32 year-old rusty bay but we avoid the Alps like a plague. You've probably got more money then we have so I expect you'll go through the Alps - we take 8/9 days and travel down the Rhone valley to Avignon, turn left through Nice & Monaco to Genova, north through the Appenines and follow the route south-east to Ancona. Modern cars can do your route in 13 - 17 hours from Calais to Venice. We're off out now, so we'll talk again - take a look at the page we wrote on RODA BY ROAD

Going through Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Austria, your one way toll cost until Venice would roughly be this:
Vignet Austria €8, Brenner pass €12, and Italy toll roads €21.
I'm sure somebody else can tell you the toll cost until Venice, when going through France.
Not sure what toll you pay from Venice to Ancona, but that is the same for both options.
Another consideration is fuel cost. Fuel prices in Austria are relatively low. I think they are relatively high in France. Prices in Germany are probably inbetween these two.
The overall distance for the Belgium-Germany option is probably 100km longer.

Having recently driven down the France, Germany, Austria, Italy route, we would certainly pay the extra and go down further on the french roads (which were absolutely wonderful!).

Thanks everyone for your responses, petrol prices etc etc, feel more confused than ever! We had heard that the French roads were a bit boring perhaps and the toll roads expensive? We have so far booked the ferry from Dover to Dunkerque and arrive late eve 11th june. We need a campsite nearby, can anyone suggest one? We have looked on the net but our language skills are non existant so having trouble looking finding out on the net. We have to get to Ancona for the midday on the 15th. Anyone have a tried and trusted route please?
Simon and Claire
ps when we are clever enough we will post a pick of our camper!

Hi - guess you are on Norfolk Lines - definitely the best way to go. Look at 'Clairette' camp site at Oye Plage (got a photo somewhere!) - we have done the same in our VW so that we get an early start the next day and don't get knocked back by the one-hour time difference. Its about 10 miles south of 'Port Rapide' and just a short run to the motorway next day. Don't forget that the autoroute to Lille is free - stop at Leclerc (junction 10) for petrol and toilets and cheese and wine and ...... If you want the details, then ask, we've got them somewhere.

Thanks for site details, glad you think ferry crossing the right one as we were panicking about booking and didn't have much time to do a thorough search, cost 75 euro's return so not too bad?
Steve The route suggested in your earlier message is this the most direct and inexpensive do you think?
