Hello

I'm a journalist writing an article for an English-language newspaper in Asia about the Greek holiday industry.

I understand business has been particulary poor this year - 30 to 50 per cent down on last year despite the Olympics.

Is there anyone involved in the tourism industry there - particularly anyone dealing with the limited number of visitors from Asia - who can give me some quotes on why you think things have been bad and, importantly, what needs to be done to make 2005 a better year?

I'd appreciate any help you can give me and thanks for letting me use your message board.

Hello Journalist

Unfortunately I am not qualified to give an informed answer to your question other than to say Corfiots believe business is down around 40% on last year.

However, I felt obliged to inform you that response to your question maybe somewhat subdued following a journalistic article that appeared in an English language - English newspaper earlier in the year. This has inevitably created rather a strong 'anti-journalist' feeling among many of the site regulars. I hope I am wrong - only time will tell and good luck with your article.

Hi Journalist,

I am not involved in tourism but having spoken to those that are (but not with tourists from Asia) there is a feeling that the general package holiday client has been enticed by tour operators to try other destinations.

Have you contacted www.gnto.gr perhaps they can help.

Julia

Many of us go to Greece because we love the place, its people and its culure. Some people though certainly went to the larger tourist centres of Greece as it represented a generally cheap holiday package. Since the advent of the Euro and demise of the Drachma, the cost of holidaying, eating out etc. has increased significantly. This is one of several reasons why tourist levels have fallen I think.
Only guessing of course, but it seems likely. Regards, Colin

Many apologies Birmingham

I hadn't realised this site was exclusively for holidaymakers. My information was that a lot of people involved in the tourism industry in Corfu use this popular and respected forum, which is why I posted my message here.

Sorry for wasting your time and enjoy the rest of your holiday, wherever it is you're spending it.

Thanks to the others for your polite responses. For the record, I've just returned from Greece and already have a lot of material for this article. What I was attempting with this posting was to be thorough and get as broad a range of intelligent and informed views as possible on the subject from people involved in the business.

If my posting caused offence to Birmingham and others, I can only apologise and say that was not my intention.

Best wishes

Journalist

I don't see any reason why this thread should be closed, it's not as if it's a TV program looking for 'The holiday from hell' is it?

Steve,

I see no reason either.  Lots of people use this site who are not holidaymakers.  This is a topic that is mentioned frequently in many threads.  The Asian market might be just what Greece needs, therefore a positive article may actually help Corfu.

Journalist,

Perhaps once you have written it you could provide us with a link to the text, I 'm sure many people may be interested in what you write.

As things stand you are a welcome visitor to the site. Have a good look through it with the search facility and you may find some useful remarks.

I agree with Steve and Julia.  I think any exposure to Corfu and it's beauty - particularly a report that states that tourism is down WHY ? should be good press.  I will be sending you a PM with some of my experiences.

Kidn regards and good luck with the article.
