With all these problems about having your debit card frozen while you are on holiday, aren't travellers cheques easier and safer to use? I was going to be using my debit card in corfu this october, but am now thinking about travellers cheques.

I have always been against relying on cr/db cards alone abroad. Years ago a clear card was declined in Morocco - no reason given! I have also had trouble in Spain, Italy and Corfu. I always tell the bank exactly when I will be away but they don't always get it right. In March, Halifax / Bank of Scotland were declining all transactions as their computer was down. I was in Spain at the time and would have been in a mess if this had gone on for more than a day or so.
I suggest that it is best to take at least some euros in cash or travellers chqs and save those for the end of the holiday, or to be used if machines fail or accounts are frozen. I also tell my bank well in advance and follow this up with a reminder phone call a few days before I travel to make sure they have entered the info correctly in their computer. Obviously, it also helps to have at least 2 cards.

I must admit I didn't realise things were quite so bad as described by a number of the posts. In my earlier post I expressed some sympathy/understanding with the banks and credit card companies. I'm beginning to change my stance ........................................
It does appear that some of them are starting to go over the top when it comes to safeguarding their interests!! I hope Members will continue to tell us of their experiences this year so we are all suitably forewarned.
Call me an old cynic, but I wonder if the "credit crunch" will increase the regularity of frozen cards??!!

Just a follow up warning! Don't think because you had no trouble one year that that will apply the next. My bank (and cr card companies) are used to me spending time in Greece, and Corfu in particular. I have still had cards frozen twice within the last year, and that's after telling them in advance.
