Over the years there have been so many bits of information about bites on this site. What some members swear by, others swear about. There seems to have been several things that have come up time and time again.

For the ladies, use a NON PERFUMED shower jel. The use fo a good mozzie repellent, make sure all exposed areas have a good covering.

For the men, it has been said drink plenty of beer as the beasties do not like the yeast. I like this idea but it is completly unproven. Vitamine B from yeast or other sources like Marmite has been said to help.

Where you are staying, close shutters and windows early. Use plenty of of anti-mozzie preparations from late afternoon onwards. Keep lights turned off unless essential. Try and save a couple of Euros and be prepared to have your holiday ruined.

Carry anti histamine tablets with you just in case you get a severe reaction to a bite. The 2 ended liquid pencils available from most supermarkets are a good first aid device if bitten. One end is alkaline, the other acid. Dependant on the bite apply the correct end to relieve the effects. As always ask locals for help, they have a wealth of local knowledge of how to deal with bites.

I am sure that this thread will run and run as it has for several years.

Yammas,  Colin.

As I am in the Mosquitoes Gormet Guide for places to eat AND would be in Sidari for the whole season I became rather obsessed with mossy repellant (I most probably glow in the dark now lol).  A couple of times I run out of the main two repellants I used ... and found others didn't work.

Jungle Formula and Autan Family are the two I found 100% effective.  I made sure I applied repellant from head to toe after around 6pm and topped up at bedtime (although I used plugins as well).  On a few occasions I must have missed the sides of my hands or my feet and got bitten .... when I did get bitten I applied good old germolene.

I saw quite a few guests with terrible bites - usually they had either not worn repellant or not been thorough enough when applying it.

Dont forget the chidren.

When we go out in the evening, we religeously cover our grandaughters from head to toe  with spray reppelant, and if they are wearing skirts, up there as well (no snide comments).

Dont know what will happen in a couple of years when they start noticing boys, ("I'm not spraying that stuff on me, it stinks"!!!)

Ah well, we can but try.

Bob.

hi, much has been said about covering up and putting repellent on whilst outdoors on a evening,to avoid the mozzys, my tip to further avoid, splash out on aircon if poss, ill never go to greek islands unless i can get a/con, its a mega deterrent , and hands up those who have spent many a sleepless night bouncin across the beds tryin to kill them,

Try "Jungle Formula" which you can get from Boots - I get badly bitten but not when I use this - you need to put it on generously.

I use the Avon Skin So Soft moisturising lotion.  Keeps the little blighters away and makes your skin feel soft and smell nice.  When I used to get bitten I used a small piezo electronic device which I bought from Boots.  I can't remember the name but it was a small green thing which you clicked onto the bite, you felt a v. small and completely painless sensation and, miraculously, the bite stopped itching - by far the best anti-itching treatment I have tried.

I swear by Autan. I also use one of those "clickers" if I do get a bite. I got mine from Asda for about £3.

I also buy fly spray from the supermarket to do the room before we go out and have a plug in.

I learnt my lesson a few years ago and totally ruined my holiday. If you have ever had an infected mossie bite on the end of your little toe you will understand.

 Our method;

One-a-day antihistamine tablets taken  each day(bitten or not), a suitable spray repellent,a handy roll-on version  to pop into a bag  and apply while out,air conditioning,  a liberal spray of all rooms with a suitable locally purchased insecticide before going out in the evening (close all windows first, close all doors immediately after)and the usual liquid plug-ins.

I have to agree though that the incidence of night-time attack has been almost totally eradicated by the presence of aircon.

If after that the little devils  do get you, that new tiny spark gun thing is very effective; so is Boots' own 'Bite and Sting Cream' as is good old Sudocrem - a must for every holiday first aid kit

Have been many a feast for the mozzies but have taken lots of ideas from all on the forum. Last year I had everyone seaching for Johnsons Off which was good when we used it , (it went off sale but info came back that it was on sale again) this was good but as we had bought emergency supplies from Tesco  and superdrug a spray in a yellow can this also worked well. I think it's just a matter taking all info  and finding a solution which works for you. Here's hoping the little blighters don't bug us too much this year.
