Hi kerry

I agree about not getting stressed, but on this occassion I had a meeting scheduled with an important new client. The lack of reliable information meant that I didn't know whether or not to fly back via Athens.

In the end, I lost the work as someone else did make the meeting.

So sorry for you Maxholland. What an awful delay! But in defence of XL, I have to say our flights to and from Kefalonia were absolutely bang on time. Have used them several times before and only experienced minimal delays, (less than an hour). Usually it isn't the fault of the airline, but circumstances beyond their control. At the moment I think the biggest culprits are our fanatical citizens who are intent on blowing up airports etc. The increased security is largely to blame for the delays, the weather isn't helping and it IS peak season.

We had the same problem last November with XL, flying to Egypt, the plane was delayed 7 hours, we eventually boarded and they then said there was a fault but the part would be delivered in 20 minutes, 2 hours later we were still grounded and they said it couldn't be repaired so off we all got and we had to wait another 5 hours for another one. Boarded that one and set off, half an hour later the Captain walked in and apologized about the delay and said the drinks were on him, which was good! He then suddenly said ' Hey, who's flying this bleep bleep thing, IM the Captain!!' At least he got us all laughing!!

We have used XL on many,many occasions. Planes have been Fly Jet, Finn air, Scan air and XL always out of newcastle and always okay. Slight delays but nothing to get upset about. Our worst experience was when we were at Cofu airport flying home with Scan air and they announced, 30 mins before departing they had changed their policy and we would not be receiving the meal we had paid for. We quickly bought something from the airport. However on boarding found that because they were not serving any food they brought the drinks trolley round 3 times!!!!!!!! So people were hungry, people were drinking huge amounts, this was a flight that left Corfu in the early hours. It was dreadful there were people passing out they were so drunk!!!! But it was on time!!!

I have booked with XL for the last couple of years without any problems but since they bought Kosmar Holidays and expanded their operations they do seem to be having more delays.

I suppose the bigger you get, the more chance of things going wrong. The last 4 flights with XL have been with Air Malta only for the last flight to be changed to a East European airline which was falling apart !

No arm rest, Hard seats, mind you the air stewardess's were better looking !

To an extent, the matter was beyond their control as a part failed when the crew were going through the take-off checks prior to departure from Corfu and replacements - including an engineer - had to be flown out from the UK.

now that sounds very familiar!!!! that is exactly what we were told when we were delayed for 30 hours ! and it was a Flyjet plane and it was the same aircraft that had a problem a few weeks prior to ours, on the same Engine ! no spare part or Engineer was flown out when we were told they were being! in fact the aircraft was there for around 4 days in total before it could leave Corfu and travel to the uk so they could finish the repairs.

So while you may have a booking with XL you may not be traveling with them ! as Sylvia says they also charter other aircraft just as they did when we flew from Newcastle last year with Finn air.

On the other hand, there was the occassion where Excell had chartered an aircraft from a Canadian airline. Shortly after take off on our flight back to Gatwick, the captain came on ansd said "welcome to this Excell airways flight to Torronto......

My better half is out in Kaminaki as we speak - she arrived 28 hours late, her luggage a further 36 hours late. Flying BA. Well sort of as she eventually got put onto an Olympic flight to Athens and then transferred to CFU.

It can happen to anybody.

We had been flying with XL for the last six years with no problems. But we booked Belfast-Manchester-Corfu for our independent Holiday because of the high prices direct from Belfast . The flight was delayed for 22 hour's last Friday were taken to Hotel in Corfu town had a couple of hours sleep, then Breakfast and lunch. The rep came said dinner was at 7. We had missed the connecting flight to Belfast, so he sold us tickets to Belfast direct leaving on Monday70 pounds each we got a Taxi back to St George and had a lovely extra 2 nights Holiday.

Not BAD it would have cost double that to buy new connecting Flights

Now that's a bit of a happy ending Gail and Joe.....at least it worked out for the best!
