Please be aware that ThomsonFly have introduced a new baggage policy effective for bookings on or after 19th June 2007.

This means that they now charge for all checked in baggage as per the details on this  page http://www.thomsonfly.com/en/bg_examples.html

However, I was comparing a booking made a few weeks ago and the overall prices seem to be the same, in fact slightly cheaper in my case if I were to book now.

It also means that if you only take hand luggage, you can take up to 10kg as hand luggage at no charge.

There are also options for prebooking increased luggage weights so as to avoid excess baggage charges at the airport.

Well that makes me glad I have already booked, in fairness most budget airlines have a small charge for the first checked in item so this is becoming the norm'. Generally I try to travel light with hand luggage only, saves waiting at those dreaded carousels. Obviously that is not possible for most people. Perhaps just another way to squeeze a few more quid out of the costomer. Seems not unreasonable at only a few pounds per item though.

Based on my experience of having booked before the rule change I would have saved a little money if I had booked now and paid for 20Kg of hold luggage, so on the face of it this doesn't look like a money making excercise at this stage.

Think they're cheeky however they're all at it. Thomson are not the only ones doing it.

A word of warning - we came back on 22 June on a Thomsons flight. Cases and hand luggage were weighed together and all our group (3) were charged excess baggage fees of 10 euros for each kilo over, as were many other people on our flight. I'm always half prepared as I don't seem to 'travel light' but others may struggle if they have spent up!

According to the web-site these new rules only apply "...on its low fares scheduled routes as part of a phased roll-out for flight-only passengers on all its routes".

I presume this should not be read as applying apply to Thomsons package bookings and to "Flight Only" travellers using the same flights as these are Charter flight not scheduled.

Maybe that will come next!

For package holiday bookings the information on the thomsonfly website says refer to your tour operator.

I've just priced up a holiday and flight only on same flight for the 18th September and these new checked in baggage charges were quoted on the flight only, this was a charter flight.

Here's the full Baggage policy:

Baggage Policy for Low Fares Flight Only customers

From 19th June 2007 Thomsonfly introduced a new baggage policy on its low fares scheduled routes as part of a phased roll-out for flight-only passengers on all its routes. All flight-only customers will continue to enjoy a free generous hand luggage allowance of up to 10kg. Customers wishing to check in luggage may do so for a small charge. A maximum of 5 items of luggage can be pre-booked by each passenger. Prices start from £3/€4.50/CK146 per item per journey, and vary by route. The appropriate charges are identified and explained clearly in the booking process, but do not exceed £10 per item per journey (or equivalent in local currency) for long haul services. Items of sports equipment to be checked in must be purchased separately.

Customers choosing to pre-book their luggage allowance in advance on Thomsonfly.com, save 50% when compared to prices at the airport or when booked via the call centre.

·                            Flight-only customers booking prior to 19th of June 3pm will not be affected by the new baggage policy.

·                            Flight-only customers booking after the 19th of June 3pm will be advised during the booking process if a charge is applicable. If in doubt, please refer to your booking confirmation where it will be stated whether a luggage charge is applicable.

Each passenger has a 20kg limit on checked-in luggage, irrespective of the number of bags checked in. Each passenger may take up to 10kg of hand luggage on board, although the combined total of hand and checked-in luggage may not exceed 25kg for each passenger without extra weight charges being levied. Extra weight can be pre-booked on Thomsonfly.com during the booking process at a 59% discount when compared to airport prices.

Baggage Policy for customers travelling as part of an Inclusive Tour

Customers travelling with Thomsonfly as part of an inclusive package holiday should refer to the baggage allowance stipulated by their Tour Operator, which is normally shown in the brochure, or on the ticket. Baggage allowances vary depending on the holiday product purchased and the Tour Operator from who the holiday product has been purchased.

Customers should consult their travel documentation closely before travelling.

Please also see our Standard Baggage Conditions below.

Standard Baggage Conditions

Any baggage may only be accepted if it is packed and secured in suitcases or similar containers and capable of withstanding reasonable handling.

Any passenger presenting baggage that is insecurely or insufficiently packed, or already damaged must sign a disclaimer waiving their right to any subsequent claim.

Each customer may take one item of hand baggage (maximum dimensions of 55x40x20cm), Other bags such as handbags, laptop bags or laptop computers must be carried within the single item of cabin baggage.

The total weight of hand luggage items must not exceed 10kg and is part of any baggage allowance which you may have purchased, or be entitled to (please see your travel documentation). You must be able to lift this yourself into overhead storage compartments and any handbag or laptop computer bag (or equivalent) must fit under the seat in front of you.

If your total baggage weight exceeds the limit detailed on your booking confirmation, excess hold baggage will be accepted for carriage subject to the conditions of acceptance of excess baggage, and will be charged at £6 / €9.00 (or local currency equivalent) per kg and longhaul £9 (or local currency equivalent) each way. Extra weight can be purchased in advance on Thomsonfly.com at a discount during the flight booking process, or via the call centre.

Any single item of checked-in luggage must not exceed 32kg, as this exceeds the recommended guidelines for airport baggage handlers to lift.

Infants under the age of 2 have no hand/hold baggage allowance.

It is recommended that video cameras, mobile telephones and other valuable items should be carried as hand luggage; they must not exceed the dimensions outlined above. Customers will only be able to carry Hypodermic Syringes in their hand luggage if supporting an approved "Diabetic Doctors letter". Customers carrying such items must also advise check-in staff.
