Hi Bobbo, There always used to be day trips that went over. As far as I know these still run. Any of the little tourist offices will advise you. How is the new addition to the family?   Moyra x

Hi bobbo, I don't want to sound negative but the best part of our trip to Albania was the boat journey back to Corfu.

I badly wanted to go to Albania last time we were on Corfu, but didn't get the chance. We managed to get round to it in May and I am sorry to say that I was really disappointed.

You would be better off taking the east coast cruise and taking pictures of Albania with a good zoom lens.

Having said that, if I had read this report before I went, I would still have gone just to say I had been.

Pete.

p.s. You DON'T get your passport stamped in Albania

Hi. Thought I ought to speak out in support of Albania after seeing the last post. As far as I'm concerned, one of the best things about Corfu is the fact that it's so close to Albania. It's probably best to avoid the day trips where you'll be shepherded around in a big group. Just go to the ferry port and buy tickets independently - a boat goes every day at around 9am. Once there, go up into the the town and get a taxi to Butrint which is an old Roman town still half-lost in the undergrowth - real Indiana Jones type stuff and truly spectacular. I'd recommend staying a night and making a trip up to the Blue Eyed spring about an hour from Saranda - again really spectacular - and going up the wild coastline heading north to Ali Pasha's old fortress at Palermo. Covered in moss and very evocative. There are decent mini hotels in Saranda where you can stay for 20 or 25 Euros a night and you can eat a sumptuous fish meal along the seafront for a fraction of what you pay in  Corfu. Remember to buy a big bag of fresh mussels from the street seller for 2 euros before you go back - then cook them in olive oil and garlic when you get back. There's a lot of rubbish and poverty in Albania and it's hard work compared to Corfu but much more rewarding if you make the effort. Corfu for all its beauty has nothing to compare with Butrint and the Blue Eyed Spring or Porto Palermo.

There are day trips to Albania, including a coach tour to interesting Roman ruins and elsewhere if you wish.   You need to book with Petrakis at least a day ahead and to take you passport when booking in order to obtain a visa.

Hello!!

I went to Albania with a group from the tourist offices of Corfu (don't know if the group has a special name!?!). Basically it was for the representatives of various tourist offices to experience for themselves the excursions they offer to tourists - I just tagged along with a friend so I'm neutral!!

Firstly I would advise you to take the extra coach trip, it is well worth it. They take you to the archaeological site at Butrint, there are some amazing mosaics (although if you go early or late in the season these are covered up with sand to protect them from the weather!!). The site also contains examples of all sorts of archaeological periods including Byzantine, Greek and Roman. I found it really interesting. Also the tour guide is a mine of information and I think is a professor at an Albanian University. You also get to see a bit more of the country which means you will see some leftovers of war and communism. However there is a lot of building going on so you will see lots of concrete shells (I went 3 years ago so things may have changed).

On the day that we went, the President of Albania (I think his name was something like Nanos - which means dwarf in Greek!) also visited the site at Butrint, so we had the excitement of seeing his motor calvacade comprising of about 8 new shiny jeeps!!

I would say that if you are interested in doing something a little different                                                                                                 on your holiday and are willing to take the extra trip (lots of walking by the way) then do it, It's well worth it. The trip also includes a buffet which was interesting!!

If you go just to get a stamp in your passport and sit in the port all day then don't bother there isn't anything to do. Albania is still an extremely poor country and they don't have many facilities for tourists, although there have been huge improvements in the last couple of years. They were however, very friendly and welcoming.

Also don't change lots of money, there is nothing to buy! My friend bought cigarattes and paid with Euros.

As to getting your passport stamped, I think you can choose. Mine was stamped, but perhaps if they are very busy then they don't bother.

I hope this helps!! As said in previous posts, look around in your resort's travel offices for a good deal (if you go with your TO they will charge you double, and warn you that the resort's trips are uninsured - lies - there are only 2 companies that run this trip....Petrakis and I've forgotten the name of the other one!!!)

Have fun

Hi

I went to Albania 3 years ago and it was great we again took a coach trip to see a bit more in our day and had a lovely meal over there.

True not much to buy there but i'm sure Corfu must have been very similar not so long ago.

I'm in Corfu on the 20 July and will be poping over to have another look to see how the Albainians are getting on OH and to buy my fags.

I live in High Wycombe and the last King of Albania, King Zog, lived locally in the Chilterns during WW2. In 1946 when he decided he couldn't return to Albania he went to live in Egypt, til King Farouk was overthrown when he moved to Paris where he died. Visit www.berkshire-life.co.uk and look in the May 2007 edition.

I planned to visit Albania this year and having read your posts I'm definately going now.
