Hi All,

I was not trying to scare monger anyone lastnight and I am as confused as the next person as I have been using products with DEET for years, although I knew not to use it on my young children.

I have found the website that I was reffering to lastnight and the link was created on a thread with regards to Mossies on page three of the Sidari message board. The link was posted by another member Alison who uses the handle "limmy".

Methinks TOO MUCH INFORMATION!

Below is Limmy'S post;-

have a look at this site my hubby has found it

Hi Barnie - thanks for the very informative link, it certainly spells out the dangers of using DEET based products.

This piece amused me - "researchers suggest that humans may experience memory loss, headache, weakness, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, tremors and shortness of breath with heavy exposure."

I already suffer from these and haven't been anywhere near DEET.

Must be Senile Dementia........................

Hi All.

Seeing that DEET is a topic of conversation at the moment, I have found this webpage on the subject of DEET and its use in insect repellants, including against the dreaded mosquito. It is good reading, and basically shows, that there is no harm in using repellants that have DEET as part of its solution. I hope this might curtail some worries on its use.

Best Wishes.

Hi all

I believe the Avon stuff works a treat but I cannot use it because oils make my P.L.E. worse.  There seems to be more mossies around this year, I used a repellant with Deet in and still got bitten, maybe I was just unlucky.

Have been reading with great interest all the tips re the mozzies.  For years I was bitten stupid by these creatures until a doctor friend told me to take GARLIC tablets before my holiday and during.  It has worked for the last 10 years I have hardly had any bites (nor has my family).  Starting taking them 10 days before your hols and during.  We also use the plugs and repellant sprays/oils, etc.  The only time we have been bitten is when we forget to take the garlic or last year in Kassiopi at the end of September we slept with the window closed which drove them crazy.  Garlic is good for you anyway so it's worth a try.  I believe what happens is the garlic gets into your blood stream and the mozzies come and try to bite you but don't like the taste.  Ask yourself why some people don't get bitten and the rest of our poor souls do - it's the blood - they either like you or hate you!!

Hi Bamber.

I have said this on other topics on the dreaded mosquito. I take a Garlic capsule daily anyway, continuously, and with the addition of lots of tonic water when on holiday also, I was the only one in our group of 12 who did not get bitten. Coincidence, I dont think so. Garlic gets in the blood as you said, and the tonic water has quinine in it, which is an anti malarial product that we use to take in the Navy.

Best Wishes.

Now that I'm totally confused i have a few questions. My 12 year old is allergic to bites, we have been given antibiotic cover just incase but would rather avoid her having to take them. We will buy plug ins for each bedroom, leave the shutters closed and windows open and use a repellent spray BUT, 1.what if our apartment has no shutters?

2.how long before we go should we take garlic caps and can kids take them?

3. what avon product is it as her skin is so sensitive it may be better to use that than repellent spray?

4. whats the option of lavender? what sort?

Sorry to ask so much but although some people are lucky and don't get bitten you can guarantee that if there is anything out there that bites it will bite my daughter, i think they come lookng for her, she obviously has tasty blood!!!

Hi Jo.

1.  It is highly unlikely that your apartment will not have shutters. Even if you have a sliding door to the balcony, there will be shutter type sliding door as well.

2.  Start taking them when you like really, the odourless type of course. But I would say a week or two before you go. They are not normally recommended for children under 12 years, so I would say it should be OK, but do check with your pharmacist when you purchase them. I will ask my parnter when she comes in, she is a Pharmacist Dispenser Supervisor, and get back to you.

3.  The Avon product referred to on this topic is, Avon Skin So Soft, and is highly recommended. However, if you child is allergic to skin products, then as described in an earlier post, she could where a patch on her wrist, or attached to her clothes, changeable daily.

4.  Lavender, I have not heard of personally as a deterrant against insect bites.

You can also, if your child likes it, get her to eat Marmite on toast or bread for breakfast or on a daily basis, this again is a valid remedy against the bites of mosquitos.

If you go back through this thread, and others also on this site, you will find many alternatives against the dreaded mosquito. I hope this has helped you in someway.

Best Wishes.
