I've been going independant for years. I like to decide the times and dates of flights myself rather than be dictated to by a TO. Additionally, there's the BIG advantage of not having reps ordering you about and not having to put up with a TO bus taking you to and from the airport, a taxi takes less than half the time.

I'm flying with BA this year on a Wednesday, hopefully the airport on the way home will be lovely and relatively quiet

There is of course the "soft option"

Why not look at booking with an independant "small" Tour operator.  This is what I tend to do almost all the time these days - the 'reps' are usually local e-pats who live on the island and are there for your assisitance only ( no sales pitch and definately No welcome meetings, although they will visit your accomodation to see you are OK from time to time i f you wish)  No tour busses - instead private taxis or pre-arranged hire car.

All in all a very civilised way to go.  You can of course book your holiday here on the CTG, Agni travel will take care of your accomodation and transfares - and all you need then is to get a flight sorted out,  simple.

Thanks everyone - all of your suggestions are really helpful and I feel much more confident now about going it alone.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out.  i finally plucked up courage and booked our flight.  This is our first time as 'independent travellers' so wish us luck, but all being well, it won't be our last.

We always go independant and have had excellent flight prices from xl and thomson and ba but with ba eurotraveller flights, which are the cheaper ones, there are no name changes allowed if someone backs out and NO refunds at all except for the taxes and even then they deduct about £30 for cancellation fees! So always read the small print!

HI MB,Don't forget your holiday insurance, you can take out a yearly policy from Argos which is very reasonable especially if you go abroad more than once a year. One of the best holidays we ever had was Corfu,Parga,Paxos and back to Corfu. That was with two young children!Once you have travelled independantly once you will be OK.It's a nice challenge and although it doesn't always work out cheaper,You do what you want when you want to do it.Good Luck,Stevie.

Help...

Have booked the flight and then emailed the hotel to confirm the booking but I can't get a reply.  They are normally so quick and I usually get a reply back within a day.  I have emailed 3 times now over the past week but still no acknowledgement.   Its the Corfu Palace Hotel in Corfu Town that I am trying to contact - I hope it hasn't closed down or anything.

Logically I then think perhaps their email system has broken - but surely they would have got it fixed within a week.  Or perhaps the only person who can use email is on holiday for a couple of weeks ....or perhaps they are more relaxed about this than I am, or ....?

If you have access to a fax machine, try sending them a fax.  I don't know why, but a lot of Greek hotels tend to respond better to faxes!  I'm sure you won't have a problem.

It might be any of several reasons including computer problems.

I would just give them a ring. You should be able to find their number on the net.
