Hi Catmandoo

Be wary of lifting a cat in Gouvia - I understand from friends that they do not really understand the stresses involved. They have a tendency (unless you tell them otherwise) to loop the lifting strops around the entire vessel, which can cause huge problems with the structure.

Hi Martyn ,

Are you being serious !! We are talking about a Med-famous company here .

I know some of the Greek methods are a bit hap hazard , but to print that sort of comment has me worried about our own situation !

Having said that , we are a bit concerned about some of the maintenance practices re: our boat.....but that is another story , still to be resolved , and does not involve marina staff .

Regards......J&H

Not sure what you mean about strops . Mine has been lifted many times using an H frame with the strops attached to all 4 ends

Did they lift without a frame ??

We often lift 'Cats' out in our boatyard with a crane and I suggest you use an H frame or spreaders.  Using just the strops puts too much tension on the hulls (squeezing them together).  If using a Wyse Lift the distribution is slightly different.

Good Luck

Hi

I'm only passing on what I was told - they suffered the "squeezing" mentioned above. It is a very big cat though and maybe things have changed.

My boat is moored at Gouvia. They do not use spreaders bars on monohulls and I cannot remember seeing them use a spreader on the cats they have hauled but I was not too interested at the time. I think they used 4 loadstraps, 2 2 each hull, fore and aft with very long bridles to reduce the compression load. Last cat I saw lifted was a lagoon 45 I think.

Gouvia will charge you 30% extra if you spend all winter out of the water, space is at a premium as the charter fleets are all out for winter maintainence. There is another yard near the town which has an underwater lift as opposed to a travelift. Much more reasonably priced but poor livaboard facilities. Not sure if they could handle a reasonable sized cat.

Good liftout and shore based storage in Preveza.
