Corfu

Hi, we are 2 couples who will be cruising the Med in September.  We will be in Corfu for one day from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.  I would appreciate any suggestions as to how we could spend our day.  Thank you.

Hi Janobu,There is so much to see in Corfu Town you could spend a whole day there. When you get dropped off you will see the "New Fort" ahead of you.At the top there are great views and you can buy a well earned drink at the cafe.Head for the "Archeological Museum" next where you can see the 17metre Gorgon pediment excavated from the "Temple of Artemis".Go north from there and follow the coast road up to the "Liston"an arcaded street built during the French occupation.Ask for a restaurant called the "Aegli". Have your lunch here in what some say is the oldest restaurant in Corfu. After that you can walk through the maze of streets leading back to the Port still having plenty of time to browse in the many shops and churches along the way.Look out for the church of St.Spiridon, with the domed top, here lies the Islands patron saint of Corfu in a silver coffin.Have a great visit,Stevie.

I agree with stevie f. But if you are not very interested in archeology, you can spend 2 hours and get a taxi to visit the Kanoni area, with the Pontikonisi (Mouse island) and Panayia Vlachernon Monastery, or visit the Achillion, the famous Emperor Sissy's palace.

If you choose to stay in the city, dont miss the St. Spyridon church and have  a lunch or coffee in Liston. Walk around in kantounia (narrow old streets) as much as you can. If there is time, visit the old fortness or the St Michael's Palace.

Have a nice cruise!

Kalimera Manos and Stevie, thank you for your suggestions.  Stevie : can we do the whole visit by foot or do we have to take a bus or a taxi ?  We are very anxious to see Corfu since this will be our first visit in Greece.  We are French Canadians.  Thank you again.

Jan.

Kalimera (Bonjour) janobu,

You can walk from the cruise's port to Corfu town, but it is a 20-30 minutes walk. If you don't want to spend your time this way, catch a taxi. It will cost you about 2 euros.

You can see the whole old town by foot, it is a pedestrian precinct (no cars in the heart of old part of the city).

From the old port, near the new fortress,You can take the ferry to Vidos,an island 10 minutes away. There is a nature reserve, and a taverna, where you can eat or drink, and lovely walks. The cost is 1 euro return, and the ferries run hourly,so You wouldn't get stuck there, bobbo

Kalimera bobbo,

if this was your first visit in Corfu and your first visit in Greece, coming from overseas and probably never came back again, and if you only had a few hours to spend before going back in your cruise ship, would you spend your precious time visiting Vidos instead of Corfu town?

You love Vidos very very much, aren't you?

Hi,Manos.I do like Vidos, and the beauty is that You can catch 1 ferry over, have a look round, and go back on the  next 1,about1 and a half hours,a break from town!

I learn't about Vidos,by going there, with mysister and her husband,on sundays. He would take us on his boat, then anchor up,at one of the beaches. We would swim, and he would fish, then,we'd all eat the fish.

These days,he runs the taverna,on Vidos, and my sister runs a bar,for him. When I retire, less than 7 years,if they still have the taverna,I am going to work there for the summer, bobbo

Hello Manos and Bobbo, thank you for your reply.  Like Manos said, we only have one day to spend in Corfu, so we will try to see Corfu Town.   I read about Glyfada beach.  Is it a nice place ? Do we have to take a taxi to go there?  We are trying to walk as much as possible ?  Thank you again.  Jan

The one thing I regret about our week on Corfu this year was not visiting Vidos - but we will be there for an afternoon next year - as we arrived back from Paxos - the we got a fantastic glimse of the island from the boat -  I understand that the ferry drops you off on the West of the island - and the beaches are over on the East.

Our taxi driver said its about 10 minutes walk across the island - can anyone who knows the place add anything to this - and perhaps suggest how its best to spend a few hours there - assuming that is we can find somewhere to park the car for that time !

Cheers

SIMON
