I would agree with that. It is definately a Canna, but I was thinking of the "Alberich" because of its size and height. This species and the one Becky refers to above are of the shorter version. Some Canna's are quite tall.

I think it is called (forgive the spelling) an Amaryllis.

I concur it is definitely a canna. The flowers themselves are almost gladioli-like. They are grown in this country but (much prized by the Victorians) I have had limited success as I always forget to lift them before the winter. In Corfu however, they can be left growing in the ground all year and boy do some of them get big and spread.

The cannas are native to India and Asia.

We have been quite successful with cannas in the UK but forgot to put them under cover last winter and lost our best one.   If you are in Roda, just pop down the lane to Spiros No.1 and they are growing in abundance!!!

Its a member of thr Canna family as it has broad leaves. If it had of been an Amaryllis the leaves would have been long and slender.

Mine still arn't flowering here, they're in pots coz our soils a bit 'iffy', apperently the first year you grow them they may not flower, One of my customers gave me mine from their plants.  I first saw them in Kefalonia & thought it would be nice to have a little bit of 'greek' horticulture in my garden!  Unfortunately our reseident squirrel was caught at work on one of the pots over the winter!

Yup its a canna, but did you know that they originated in India and during one of the wars they used to dry out the seeds and use them as shot.

you can grow them in the UK in pots but winter them in the shed/garage

Just noticed that your picture of the flowers was taken on 8/07/2006, that was my 50th birthday, many thanks for the flowers Nathan but a bottle of Metaxa would have been better lol.

Richard
