Has anyone got any advice on driving in Corfu. This year we may hire a car and neither of us have ever driven abroad before. Would a small car suit us as opposed to a larger car for instance? There will only be 2 of us and are staying in San Stefanos NW.

We always hire a 'jeep' - Suzuki Samurai - they are that bit higher off the ground and sturdier for the rough roads!

You can also explore some of the mountain tracks that are shown on Stefan's great map.

We have hired jeeps previously but because of the very narrow roads decided to hire a small car this year which we found much better.  If you decide on a small car definitely opt for aircon!

Agree with Helen ! Hire a small car with aircon for the first time. A lot of the jeeps are short wheelbase and a bit unstable on  the roads there if you are not used to it!

I always put my watch on my right wrist to remind me to drive on the right, also in a panic situation just go to the side you are wearing your watch,

My opinion is to hire a small car and not a jeep, as it is easier to control it and much cheaper as well. You can go almost anywhere with a small car in Corfu, as almost all the attractions, the best beaches and the villages are approachable by asphalt roads.

Drive careful and don't forget that in Greece we drive in the correct side of the road!

i find it a terrible problem to drive on the other side of the road-i keep trying to change gear with my left hand or i get in the passenger seat and wonder where the steering wheel is!!

this year we are going to try and find a hire car with automatic transmission so i can at least not keep banging my left hand on the door!!

suppose its the same but opposite when anyone comes to England.

I am used to the small and windy roads as i live in the beautiful peak district in england, just the reverse position driving i have a problem with.

does anyone know where i can hire an automatic car?

Definitely a small car with aircon.  I too have problems with still trying to change gear with my left hand.

This year I drove on the right for the first time in 11 years, usually leaving it all to Richard who takes to it like a duck to water.  My advice is to only go as fast as YOU feel capable of.  If someone is too close behind you then slow down and pull over when possible to let them past.

Get used to the coast road between Kassiopi and Ipsos before you tackle any of the roads to Pantokrator, Ano Perithia, etc.  Remember to use your gears as well as your brakes, and go very slowly round bends.

Have a good time

Sue

I know for sure that you can hire an automatic car by www.hertz.gr, with 3 offices in Corfu. I thing that other car hire companies will have automatic cars as well.

I can understand how difficult it is for you driving in the other side of road. Every time I visit London and try to cross a road, I turn my head and look/check the wrong side of it, often hazarding my life from the passing cars...

A KIA Piccanto is ideal, its small has enough power, air con, 2/4 door models. Around 135 euros for 5 days and 20/25 euro to fill

A tip on driving in Corfu is to always keep yourself in the centre of the road and to use your gears changing down when coming downhill allowing the engine to help slow you down (not taught by many motoring schools nowadays).

Richard
