Hi Helen

Maybe not. It was a bit hair raising at the time because the captain never told us why we couldn't land til after the last attempt. But he said they had to have clear view of runway before they land after all better to go somewhere and refuel than land in the sea!

I feel very mixed about the postings on this topic.  Anyone who has read my "fear of flying" posting will understand why.  Reading failed landing attempts, low clouds, lack of fuel, turbulence etc. gives me palpitations and I'm only sat on my settee in the living room!

However, reading all the "i've never had a bad flight to Corfu" replies does give me considerable hope.  I am a very bad flyer, too, Helen, and can sympathise.  But whoever said "the end justifies the means" is correct (even if I can only say that hand on heart once my feet are back on solid ground!)

Helen, all you have to remember is this. Pilots do a hell of a lot of training, both in simulators, and in the right hand seat of the flight deck, long before they become even a Co-Pilot. The they are in the right hand seat for a long time before qualifying even further are going over to the Left hand seat, the Captian himself.

The two or three guys on the flightdeck know what they are doing, with everyones safety in mind first. If they have a reason for doing something as described above, then they justify that reason, and then take action, and not before.

In the instance of fuel, most aircraft flying from the UK, UK owned aircraft will normally have enough fuel to do what they want. Rather than keep flying round an airport using more fuel on attempts to land or circle, they will fly back up to cruising height, using less fuel once there to go else where until the problem is resolved.

It has been said time and time again, flying is one of the safest forms of transport. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy it. Happy flying.

Yeia mas, Chris.

Yes, thank you for that Sailor. I might have to print it and take it on board with me, as once on a plane i'm totally brainless and can only think of the fact that i'm now in this "thing" that i have no controll over.

Helen,

if you are really worried abut flying, there is a great webstie called www.scaredofflying.com.  Its run by a pilot called keith, who also wrote a book called flying without fear.  its a bit like this website in that you can post your question, and then the captain, or others will reply.  You can even ask him about flying to Corfu.

Hope this helps

Hi MB,

Will certainly check it out. Had a quick look and sounds promising. Thank you for that!

i have heard that the most dangerous part of flying is taking off and landing.  I also read an article some time ago that conflicts with the notion of flying being the safest form of transport.  I never used to have a problem with flying until a few years ago.  Now i hate it and can't wait to get to the other end and get off!!

Thank you, that's an excellent site you've posted MB....I'll forward it onto my Mum, who has a fear of flying.

Glad the flying without fear site is useful.  I found it when I bought the book.  I hate flying myself although I wouldn't let it stop me from going anywhere.  Every time I go to Corfu I feel more confident because I think I know where all the turns, dips etc are.  But...every time we have gone we seem to have taken a different route.  We have banked over the town, gone out to sea, taken off from both ends of the runway - and now landed at both ends.   I wonder which route we will take this time - can't wait though.  Its always been a good flight though - and always less than the predicted 3 hours, every when the French air traffic controllers were on strike.
