I am interested to know if members have any tips or advice with regard to mosqitoes.  They can be annoying.......what's your most effective method for deterring them or, indeed, dealing with the bites?  I know not everyone is bothered by the little pests but some people do get badly bitten and need all the advice they can get.  If you can......name the product.

I use fenistil as an after-bite treatment and find it quite effective.

M&S "extra" repellent.........oooodles of it, and plug ins for the room......no requirement for any after bite remedies then

Eating garlic!! That's one of the myth's but I don't know if it actually works though.

I agree with Trace about the plug-ins, as it's usually at night they bother me the most. Other than that any of the mozzie potions seem to work for me.

I've also heard of people using citronella as a more natural deterrent.

The product we use is great.  It comes in a big green bottle, and tastes great.....MYTHOS! lol

Honestly drinking beer is a great insect repellant!  As is eating garlic.  Andy and I eat and drink these in vast amounts on holiday and don't really bother using insect repellant.  We never get anymore than a couple of bites between us for the whole holiday!

When we do use insect repellent we like the 'Mozzi Guard' that comes in a spray tin.  It is a bit pongy but has always worked for us.

And we always take a couple of the plug ins for our apartment.  Don't leave home without them!

In recent tests, none of the natural products worked anywhere near as effectively as the synthetic options.

Deet based products were still deemed to be the most effective, although should be used with caution, especially on children.

Not for David and myself I'm afraid Natalie......this is one thing that definitely didn't work (we did try LOL).

Perhaps it's just that you're not as susceptible to being bitten as many unfortunate others (ie ME 'n' HIM) ??

Thanks for that but I'd rather be eaten alive than drink beer......does it work with gin and tonic.  We do use plug ins at the villa....(remember to leave a window open so that repelled mosquitoes can leave!!!) and those spiral burning things if we're sitting on the balcony.  We  use a repellant with 100% deet  before going out at night. I also find the little piazzo electric shock treatment on the skin stops itching if you are bitten.  Sounds like a military operation, doesn't it??  We're not usually bothered by them (is it any wonder??) I just thought advice on the forum would be useful to some visitors!!

I always thought you were meant to keep all windows and doors shut if you were using plug ins.......don't they work by actually killing the beasties???

I've heard that any type of alcohol can keep them at bay so maybe your gin and tonic will work! lol

I've also heard that eating Marmite helps keep the mozzies away - its the yeast in it like the beer.  But then again you may prefer to be eaten alive than eat Marmite!   Personally I love the stuff though...

Andy and I just don't get bitten, they don't like us, which is lucky enough.

Trace - I have also heard that you should leave a window open as they get aggitated from the repellant and want out.  It is probably then that the little blighters attack! lol

Andy and I came back to our apartment one night after one too many wines and we left (well Andy!) left our doors and shutters open all night!  I could have killed him! lol
