Well, the above is good news.  It seems things have changed drastically at the Athens Airport from when I was last there, May of 2001.  And thank goodness for that!  However, I must say, having a 5-star hotel adjacent to the Airport is not that wonderful.  Imagine having to pay $400 just to sack down for about 5 or 6 hours between flights!  There ought to be inexpensive lodgings-places for people stuck between flights.  And/or perhaps the people who arrange the schedules of planes ought to keep into consideration the fact that people from Europe (or the States) will be arriving at midnight or so and might want less than a 7-hour layover just in order to catch a flight to an island?  Barring that, perhaps the managers of the Airport could make the whole Airport, including all the [duty free?] shops, open and available for Europeans waiting for the 7 a.m. time when they could get their boarding passes.  This would be a win-win for everyone, since the shops would gain from window shoppers who buy things while they're waiting, and the people waiting for flights would have something to do except staring at the ceiling!

But as my friends on Corfu say, That makes too much sense.  The Greeks have their own way of thinking!

Please allow me to add that even though there may be many flights leaving from Athens Airport, going to Corfu, daily, the fact is, from my weak experience, the flights, at least prior to the huge tourist influx in July and August every year, are not really coordinated with flights incoming from other countries.  Thus, although there may indeed be many flights during the day, in my experience, after 8 PM, there are few if any flights to Corfu until the next day.  That was the point I was trying to make.  There doesn't seem to be any coordination so that the traveler doesn't end up being stuck at Athens Airport for the entire night!  And when one has already traveled for almost 20 hours just to get to Athens, this can be very discouraging.  Of course, for people who fly only for a few hours (say, from the U.K.) to get to Athens, this is not that big a problem.  But if one has already been in transit for 20 hours, this can be a nightmare.  And it is not always easy to coordinate the myriad flights from the Western U.S. to Athens so that one arrives prior to the last flight to Corfu!

There is an Accor Sofitel hotel next to the airport which, while not quite $400 per night, is certainly not cheap.  The lowest-price accommodation to be found is a double-room at 156 euros per night (plus 22 euros per person for breakfast).  But these prices do not include local taxes!! [o)]

For the same price, you could get a cab from the airport into town, grab a meal, get a hotel room and get a cab back to the airport in the morning.[:errr:]

It would be a lot cheaper to take a deluxe sleeping bag instead!!  [;)]

I have stayed at the Sofitel - opposite the airport many times. A twin room (plus cot for the baby), with two bathrooms and internet connection costs a very reasonable 160 Euros. A 'dive' in Athens can cost anything between 60-120 euros! See my report when we visited two years ago:

Enjoy.
