Just a warning in case you think you are seeing things or you think your travel agent is tryimng to rip you off!!

On Thomson's flight website, they are no longer accepting deposits for flight bookings for 2006; payments have to be made in full when you book!

Even booking through a travel agent like us they have increased the flight-only deposit from £60.00 per person to a crazy £130.00 per person for 2006. In many cases on the bookings I have done so far, that can be more than 50% of the total cost up front and some people aren't travelling for over a year! Total rip-off.

We are all in in arms over it in our trade press and switch selling to other charter flights where the deposits are as low as £40.00 per person, but the problem is if you want a Tuesday, it is only Thomsons. If you want a Friday at least there are other charter carriers.

Regards.

Excel Airways are offering Friday night flights from Bristol (didn't check other airports) for approx £145.00 (+fuel supplement) with very low deposit for Summer 2006 (£179.00 Monday day).  Seems reasonable to me.

Very true Peter, it is extremely annoying.

I have already booked my flights for May next year, and yes, unfortunately had to pay the full amount up front.

I usually travel with Excel Airways, who only ask for a small deposit initially, but they only fly from Glasgow on Mondays and due to my shift pattern that means using an extra two days holiday.

So does that mean that they will have the full price of the holiday plus the holiday insurance money if you take that out with them as well ... sitting in their bank account for a year making interest....That not bad if you have 100,000 customers is it..

Hi

Call me an old cynic if you must (and most do!) but the question I find myself asking is:

Do Thompson really want us buying flight only or are they really trying to convince us that their hotel holidays and cruises are better value?

Obviously, you must answer this one for yourselves, but there are no prizes for guessing what mine would be!

Their argument is that if the no-frills carriers ask for payment up front then they will as well.

However, I can buy no-frills flights to Ibiza for July/August next year for £100.00 per person so for a family of 4 that is £400.00 up front. That wouldn't even cover the cost of 2 people with Thomsons to Ibiza in the school holidays next year and that is where their argument falls down.

However, I guess if you look at the scheduled airline market at the likes of BA, Virgin, Cathay etc, you have to pay in full for those when you buy your ticket and they cost a lot more, so maybe it won't be long before all the charter companies start to charge in full when you book and that will shake things up a bit!

Regards.

Not much comfort I know but, if you are having to pay your fares in full now, I suppose it does mean you only have your spending money to worry about!

Coo this could be a real problem for us as we book something like 5 or 6 trips in January for the season ahead. And we prefer Tuesday flights.

Ah well, I suppose that we may be using Olympic through Athens for some of our trips next year. Never mind, I like Athens airport, and if we have a long time between connections we can always nip into the city and meet up with friends.

Cant possibly pay 6 full lots of fares in one go.

Bob.

Do you think it will make a difference to how people book their holidays? Do you think more people will leave it till the last minute? We always do and it's usually a mad panic like this year trying to get flights and accomodation it's a nightmare, this is the main reason we don't do package holidays because there are never any left!!!! We only do this because of our work though.
