Just got an email from First Choice saying that from summer 2012 all their holidays will be 'all inclusive'. Not good news for taverna and bar owners across Europe. Lets hope that others do not follow!

First Choice announced that they will be AI for 2012 at the end of 2010. They have now dropped many Corfu properties and if you search their website only 11 properties come up for the whole of the island. Their sister company Thomson is still available to book self catering.

It's all part of a plan to develop holiday villages around the Med. Tui has already bought up a chain with existing villages in Rhodes (I think) and Turkey - and they will be building more. What is more disturbing is the fact that they promote these holidays as opportunities for families to be together when the reality is that many chose them so that the parents can relax while the kids do their own thing.

Well said Steve, yes I can see the advantage, but really cant see the attraction, why stick yourself somewhere for 2 weeks and possibly never see outside the hotel walls, am thinking of Agios Gordios here, we meet people in the town who are amazed at what they find, but they are just a handful.

Why do people always assumne folks who stay AI never venture off the complex?
I have yet to actually meet anyone who spends the whole of their two week holiday on site and hasn't ventured out at all! Even if they have, surely it is their choice. Several years ago when staying at Blue Bay, St Spiridon there was a family staying with a severely disabled child. The logistics of taking their child out and about daily would be too much for most people to cope with. Instead they had all facilities to hand to have a comparitivly relaxing holiday.
Personally, I would not stay AI in Greece but it does suit some people and at least it provides summer time employment on the island.
Just my opinion..lights the blue touch paper and ducks
out of the argument...sorry discussion.

On our first visit to Corfu we stayed at the Yaliscari Palace Hotel with Thomson Gold, not then A/I but full board!
Because of the hotels remoteness we decided to explore on foot, discovered Agios Gordios and the sister hotel to the one we were staying at.
Sinarades where we ate the most lovely lamb and also Pelekas, in fact Sinarades became top of our agenda when buying a property in Corfu.
We walked through olive groves quickly to enjoy the mayhem on the bus to Corfu town that we picked in Pelekas.
Captain Theo's boat trip was an experience I will never forget, so enjoyable!
With hind site, if the hotel had have not have been so remote I doubt if we would have ventured very far apart from the after dinner drink in a close by resort, but as there were no resorts available we explored, got away from the hotel at most meal times, still keep in touch with the staff and met the lovely people of Sinarades, Pelekas and most of all a real insight to the real Corfu and her people.
We stayed at the same hotel a few years later, had it changed---yes--decor was more modern--- still the same staff---an entertainment team that had to relay in 8 different languages informing us of the menu of activities for the day! No good to us as their accents in English we couldn't understand!
The hotel did it's best to cater for all nationalities, one nationality in particular used to empty the self service food counter in seconds---as if they had never seen food in their lives---so we all had to wait until the buffet counter was replenished!
Most of the food on their plates ended up in the bin!
Noisy at night when people were sleeping as guests had stock piled drinks, as after 11-o'clock drinks had to be paid for!
Full board was a good experience, but they're day was all about eating in my opinion.
All inclusive didn't suit us, drinks of low quality and no service therefore no tipping required, except for a tin box on the bar.
All I would say is don't knock it until one's tried it.
It does serve a purpose and in my opinion folk who stay all A/I get rather bored with the routine and do venture farther afield looking for a change to their day.

Have to agree with you. Never gone all inclusive in Corfu, but have elsewhere. No way, in my opinion can you eat the same food for 2 weeks. Only ever did it when the boy was very young.
I absolutely love exploring and finding restaurants/cafes off the beaten track. Also they are so much cheaper than in the recognised resorts.
Variety is the spice of life!!!

We have stayed many times AI...Where do you get the idea that you eat the same food for 2 weeks? I ate something different every evening, I always have done whichever AI I have stayed at. Elliemay, do you mean that exactly the same food put out each day, because that has never been my experience at all the only time I have been dissapointed was last October we booked a quick week in Spain, it was not our type of place at all! All people seemed to do was eat and laze about, so yes that does happen, how boring!
But AI does have its place...and the best thing to do is find out as much as you can about a place before you go xxx
