As above you cannot drive through Albania! And I wouldn't drive through the former Yugoslavia unless I really had to. And you can forget 12 hours from Trieste to Igoumenitsa! No one in their right mind does that drive!
Also weatherwise, April/May a far better bet than March but you could still have a lot of bad weather (heavy rain etc) in Corfu in April or it could be OK.
Plus you could easily be driving through snow in northern Greece as well in April time so that needs to be taken into account if you did decide to ignore all this advice and go that way.

Hi
From my points of view...
I used to do the old Yugoslavia run before the war, fairly enjoyed it but as things hotted up it got a little scary wierd at times, I suppose the different factions didn't feel they could trust strangers anymore at the time.
Never went through Albania though cos as Martyn says it was pretty much closed to through traffic.
Regards the ferry versus 1500km, I like driving but I also like the ferry which I can treat as a mini cruise, also travelling alone the cost of a deck passage + vehicle is about same as the extra fuel would be. Add to that if you can get by in Greek and approach the purser with the right attitude you can get a cabin upgrade for next to nowt with a little friendly banter and a little slight of hand if you know what I mean...

Hmm! Ok, a lot to think about. Me and Elaine did Dubrovnik (half way to Greece) 3 years ago from Trieste in roughly 6 hours but then we're maniacs. It comes from having lived for 4 years in Spain and dealing with their idea of driving. Our friend who quotes 900 miles from Trieste is correct. It's actually 1260 km. But I didn't actually say we'd do it in one go. Regarding the potential of snow in Greece you should be in Slovenia now. Scarey!! but a lot of fun, if you've got the right tyres. I'll tell you what..we'll do it and report back on our return..if we ever get back..or get there indeed. Croatia is no problem. It's just Albania but hell they're just about to adopt the Euro so come on!! It's not such a bad world Spear Travel. Best wishes. Elaine and John.
