But I'll ask it anyway, the house  we are buying has an open fire place,a very tall chimney, and a woodpile outside, who's wood it is we don't know.My question is ,will we need a chimney sweep,if so,are there any on Corfu?or do we hire the brooms, poles etc, and do it ourselves,?or because wood seems the norm  for fuel does the chimney not get sooted up?any thoughts on this matter?

We clean ours ourselves!!

Cover the room with dust sheets before you start, and find some strong string/rope.   We use either a scrunched up olive net, or a baby cypress tree (sorry!!).  Tie the string to both ends & one person stays at the bottom, and another gets up on the roof............take turns to pull it up & down a few times - cleaned chimney!!

There are things in the shops, that you can 'throw' on the fire - which supposedly clean the chimney as they burn, but I personally don't believe that they are as efficient as 'our way'!

We have 2 log burning fires here in Wales and we sweep the chimney ourselves every summer and its surprising how much soot comes down, as wehope to move to Corfu we will definately be taking our chimney sweeping kit with us.

We bought chimney sweeping poles and brushes in England and brought them to Corfu in one of our suitcases. We also use the powder that you throw in the fire which is supposed to clear the chimney.

The wood in England creates a lot of soot but the olive wood seems to create less than coal. It also seems to burn slower than coal. Although we have only used our fire for two winters there dosn't seem to anything to sweep away. I did ask my Greek neighbours and they seemed to think I was a little odd even asking the question so I would guess they are not cleaned a lot!!

The method described by Orchard is the one reccomended to us. It seems quite normal for our elderly neighbours to clinb up onto their roofs to drop a line down with a weight attached, and then drag the bunch of olive netting down and up to clean the chimney.  I dont think it works particularly well because olive wood creates a large amount of tar (hence those funny little cans dangling from chimney elbows on external metal chimneys), and our neighbours often have chimney fires which they allow to burn out but keep an eye on just in case the roof timbers should catch alight, the ends of which are already very blackened.

Our wood burner is Sweedish and incorpoates a heat exchanger above the fire box for central heating, although I have not bothered to connect it to anything it is a source of a problem because the void above is almost inaccessible but must be cleaned every couple of weeks of use otherwise the draght mechanism does'nt work and the house fills with smoke in no time. Otherwise it is incredibly efficient.

Why a silly question ,everyone knows you need to keep the chimney clear for Santa Clause.
