The city of Berat in south central Albania is also known as Berati in Albanian. With a population of around 45,500, the old town of Berat was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Berati is a wonderful example of Ottoman architecture and has a wealth of interesting architectural and historical buildings.
Berat has been listed by UNESCO as a heritage site. Located in central Albania, Berat bears witness to the coexistence of various religious and cultural communities over the centuries. It features the castle of Kala which originates in the 4th century although most of it was built in the 13th century. There are many 13th century Byzantine churches in the citadel area as well as several Ottoman era mosques.
