Back to Top of KIDS Kefalonia Fundraising 2011 PageKIDS Xmas Market 11th December - Report

Sadly, the KIDS Christmas Market on Sunday 11th December was closed down by the police. The police confiscated the KIDS stock of mostly second-hand items along with the books4unicef stock and collecting tins with money.
Amongst the haul were hand-made Christmas decorations, second hand crockery and cutlery, some paintings and what the police listed on their statement as 'faux bizou'. They also confiscated some toys and the Linda Project's CDs entitled 'This Is Who We Are' produced by the orphans that KIDS support in Uganda.
A court case was held in Argostoli on Wednesday 14th December.
A witness for the prosecution stated that there were people selling items at the bazaar without giving receipts for the items sold.
A Police witness said that there were no endorsements on view for the day’s event by the charities advertised.
For the defence, UNICEF endorsement for the event on 11th December was produced and statements sent in from UNICEF in support of KIDS fundraising on the island were used in evidence along with UNICEF’s stamped receipts of donations for which they had records back to 2003. Statements and receipts from the Linda Project in Holland were also used in evidence.
Witnesses told the court that the funds raised at such events were always counted at the end of each event in the presence of the fundraisers and that payments were made to the charities for which receipts were obtained.
The defendant representing the taverna stated that because of the crisis in Greece she also wanted to support the charity known as Smile of the Child and chalked up their name on a blackboard advertising the event. Because of the last minute decision, no endorsement had been requested from that charity.
The defendant representing the KIDS group stated that it was her way of life to help raise funds for children’s charities which started in England with Oxfam and Save the Children and in Greece from 1994 with an appeal from the Nomarhia Argostoli for funds for visiting children from Bosnia. Having organised many jumble sales and bazaars she had never thought of giving receipts for 50 cents and 20 cents which is how the money is collected.
In summing up the magistrate recommended that the defendants should continue with their charity fundraising but in the future great care is required to ensure that customers buying items should always be issued with a receipt and that apart from the legal requirement of the issue of receipts, it was also in force for the protection of the fundraisers themselves. The magistrate said that because the KIDS stock and money were confiscated by the police at the scene of a crime, they could not be released. No fine was imposed on the defendants but in the event of a future misdemeanour the defendants could be imprisoned for 19 days.
As a postcript from Francesca Roe (one of the defendants) I would like to add that the KIDS group over the years has raised over fifteen thousand euros for Registered Children’s Charities such as Save The Children, Linda Project, UNICEF and Hamogelo.
(To be precise, there are receipts to show the following amounts: DRACHMA 289,620 drs, POUNDS STERLING 1,644.77 gbp and EURO 13,578.70 euro.)
All items for sale by KIDS at the bazaar had been donated free of charge by KIDS supporters and volunteers.

GENEVA/ABIDJAN, 18 March 2011
UNICEF is appealing for US$ 51 million to meet the rapidly growing humanitarian needs of children and families devastated by the post-election crisis in Cote d'voire. At least 60 per cent of the more than 300,000 Ivorians who have been internally displaced by ongoing violence and the vast majority of the 90,000 refugees, who have fled to neighboring Liberia, are women and children.
In any emergency, children are the most vulnerable. Over the next three months, this critically needed funding will help UNICEF continue to provide lifesaving emergency supplies and services to the increasing number of children affected by the crisis.

Latest Newsletter

We, as LindA Project, will continue on our chosen path. The fruits show it to be a good path, not always easy, but that doesn’t matter. We do not only give money, we try to mould a young generation of chanceless children into responsible and initiative adults with a future.
The LindA Foundation in Uganda is presently involved in 3 projects: The Children’s Home, the Primary School and the S.O.S. programme (Send an Orphan to School).
The CD 'This is who we are' by LindA’s Kids has received a warm welcome. There were many orders for more CD’s. If you would like to receive more CD’s, please contact the secretariat. We can now also be found on YouTube! You can find the link on the home page of our website.
The revenue of the CD’s is meant for the school fees of next year. These have increased enormously, as have the food prices.

Back to Top of KIDS Kefalonia Fundraising 2011 PagePhilippine Community Fund

The Phillippine Community Fund was started by a young Air Hostess, Jane Walker from the UK who was on holiday in the Phillipines in 1996 when she stumbled across a dump site where children as young as 4, some without shoes, were working searching for food or something they could sell to buy food. Their plight so touched her heart that for the next 6 years she personally funded a support network for them, but their needs outstripped her resources and in 2003 the charity was formed. Their aim is to provide education, nutrition, medical care, spiritual guidance and work for some of the poorer family members, they make jewellery and other items from recycled waste.

Madeline has a range of their products for sale and collects ring pulls from drinks and food cans, which she takes to their UK office, where are then sent to the Phillipines. They also offer a Sponsering option where for 18 gbp a month a child is put in touch with you and it ensures the child is supported.

website

This is a necklace made from recycled glossy magazines and is just one of the beautiful and unique items of jewellery available from Madeline's stalls or you can add to basket online at the website:
www.p-c-f.org

April 2011 update

Madeline would like to Thank all those who have supported the Phillippine Community Fund charity and am pleased to say from the Sale of recycled items, donations and charity events have raised over gbp 1300 since the launch last October.

Sadly, due to what seems a political issue, the Phillippines are refusing to accept empty crisp pkts and used toothpaste tubes into the country to be recycled so at the present we are only collecting the ring pulls from food and drinks cans...
Please continue to support this so worthwhile charity.

Easter Market

PCF will have a stall at the Easter Market at Prokris Park on the 20 and 21st April 2011 from 11am till 6.
A great opportunity to buy Easter presents for a good cause.
