Situated near the Castle of Saint George the church was built in 1580, according to an inscription on the wall. At the time this was the cathedral of the then capital of Kefalonia. It has a carved wooden iconostasis with lovely icons. The old belfry is under restoration.
The church of the Evangelistria is connected with the Sissia monastery and during the period from the Sunday of St. Thomas to the Sunday of Samaritida the miraculous icon of the Virgin from the monastery of Sissia is kept in the church. During this time divine services and prayers are held in honour of the Virgin.
