Back to Top of Exploring By Foot PageWalking Holiday Kefalonia Ithaca

This guided walking holiday offered as part of the Headwater Holidays Walking Collection takes in all of the variety offered by the two islands. You￿ll find secret coves, cliff paths, classical ruins, and Venetian castles. There are shady paths, and westerly sea breezes keep the climate several degrees cooler than other parts of Greece, even in July and August.
Spanning just 35km x 33km, Cephalonia is the biggest of the Ionian Islands. Local folk have not hurried to embrace tourism, and you￿ll find the traditional activities of olive farming and fishing going on as they have for centuries. Less than a mile away lies the green and fertile island of Ithaca. The island has a special place in the Greek imagination as the Kingdom of Odysseus
On Cephalonia we stay in Karavomilos, at the quieter end of the island at the *** Athina Beach Hotel, where the tradition of Greek philoxenia(hospitality) is combined with all the comforts & facilities of a modern hotel. It￿s run by Makis and his family ￿ his mother has the greenest fingers on the island and the exterior of the hotel is a riot of colour! The views from the hotel across the Sami bay are stunning and worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster (￿Captain Corelli￿s Mandolin￿ was set here for those who have seen the film or read the book), and the beach is literally yards away from the front door.

This island is rich in diversity and blessed with some of the most dramatic scenery in the region. From the National Park of Mount Ainos at 1628m (higher than Ben Nevis), which dominates the island with its presence, to the compelling beauty of the wild countryside, fauna, fertile valleys, 50 varieties of orchid, citrus fruits and grapes, picturesque Greek villages and a coastline with an endless number of beaches.
Such variety in natural beauty makes this an ideal destination for walkers and we are sure that you will find Cephalonia an unforgettable experience. Little known and little explored unlike many of its neighboring islands, Cephalonia remains largely unscathed by tourism.
The majority of the places that you walk are off the beaten track and away from the tourism areas. You will walk along shepherd￿s tracks, narrow lanes, rural villages, beautiful coastlines and high mountain trails. You are sure to leave the island feeling that you have discovered the real Greece.
From April to the end of June and again in October and November, Cephalonia is a vibrant mass of flowers, their colours creating a colourful tapestry mixing with the scent of wild herbs and pine. During the day the temperature ranges from 15C - 25C, the evenings can be a little cooler and a jumper is sometimes needed when the sun goes down.

On most days you will be taken to and from the walking destinations in private taxi. Your guide leads 5 days of walking, one day is a free day when you have the option of several self-led walks, or you may decide to relax and spend the day on the beach the choice is yours. The group usually leaves base by about 9.30am on most mornings and returns between 4-6pm. The walks vary between 4 / 6 hours, with stops for lunch and sightseeing. Although our walks are not hard, some of the terrain is uphill, however, you can always go at your own pace, we are in no rush.
