Hi, I have kept my 34 ft yacht on a permanent mooring in a bay in Sivota-Mourtos for the last six years (along with maybe a dozen other German, Italian, Greek and English boats). The bay itself has been a preferred wintering location for 25 years. This summer the Port Police have said we cannot leave the boats there any more (no real reason) and we should be in the marina (full of holiday boats). The marina is less safe than the bay for security and weather conditions and we would take up valuable space for touring yachts to come in and spend money. Has anyone heard of anything similar in their area? Advice from Greek friends is do nothing and leave the boats in the bay. A year ago they were recommending the bay to owners wanting to winter, so don't know where we stand.

I seem to remember hearing of a similar occurrence, a while ago somewhere else a while ago, it all just fizzled out I think. Martyn G, might have a better recollection.

Hugoman - you don't say where you are moored.  Are you somewhere in the channel that runs between the mainland and Sivota Island?

I only ask, because last year the port police were getting stroppy about people anchoring in the area between town quay and the marina down in Lefkas - using the arguement that anchoring in a fairway was illegal (despite the fact that it didn't go anywhere!) Just a thought.

PS. I may be in Mourtos sometime during the week commencing 24th June (not sure yet).

You are right that mooring in the channel is a bit of a problem peak season. No, I moor in the bay on the north island - to your right as you sail south through the channel. Boats have been left on the fixed moorings there for 25 years and last year the port police were recommending it to people as a safe wintering location. I have heard the law they are citing (but never previously enforcing) is designed to stop old commercial vessels being dumped in remote locations. Can't see the relevance to 10-15m yachts. They are also happy for people to moor out there as long as they sleep aboard so not a fairway issue. We bought our house in Sivota seven years ago because of the excellent wintering for our boat. We are now feeling very unwelcome and I want feel like selling up and going back to UK. Unhappy
I was in Lefkas last week and there is still a lot of freeanchoring off the quay (mainly because quay is full of unused charter boats). Some days only 3-5 spaces change hands.
