One Corfu car hire company tells me it won't make any difference to them as they only check the plastic part anyway!

Dennis there are still some people who do not hold a photo type license so they will have to apply for one pronto if they wish to hire a car.
Beside the sea all worries wash away!!

As I understand it, it is the paper counterpart that is being scrapped. If your photo driving licence came with such a document, it would be better to hang onto it (rather than throw it away, as suggested by the DVLA) and take it with you on holiday.

In addition, you will be able to obtain the code mentioned above from DVLA. GOV. UK (I think) Show your licence. To apply for your code, you will need your driving licence number, post code and National Insurance Number. You need to apply 48 hours before needing the code (so you could apply from abroad, if you have internet access) and the code is then valid for 72 hours - so you can hand it to the hire company at the time of hire.

If you have an old fashioned all paper licence, you can still go through the process described above to obtain the code number, but there is no need to apply for a new photo licence.

Sue,
You don't need to apply for a photocard licence if you don't have one as the paper licence is still valid if it was issued prior to the introduction of the photocard licence in 1998.

As I had never been asked for my counterpart driving licence I thought I had better ask my car hire company boss, and this was his reply;-

I copy and paste what I wrote in Tripadvisor:

Hello, my name is Giannis I am the owner of a local car rental company (doesn't matter which one, I don't want to advertise myself in Tripadvisor).

As Ana said it's all a storm in a teacup. We always ask for either the paper or the plastic part and to be honest we don't care if someone has a couple tickets for speeding or other violations as long as they have a valid driving license. What could we do?Cancel the reservation at the airport? It doesn't make sense.

I am pretty sure all local companies feel the same, please check with international companies, they may have a different view on the subject.

See you in July!

Kind regards,
Giannis.

As Giannis has said, if you use an International Company check before you leave, but otherwise, your photo licence or old paper licence is fine by them.

10 and a bit weeks to go  Big smile

It's all Greek to me!

But that is one persons reply before it is introduced. I would advise anyone hiring abroad to abide by the law and provide the relevant information. What happens when suddenly the hirers abroad become aware of the new rules and you cannot provide them with what is required. NO CAR!!!

Confirming your driving record to an employer or when hiring a vehicle

After 8 June 2015 if you are hiring a vehicle or you drive for a living and you are asked to provide evidence of your driving record (entitlements and/or penalty points), you will be able to do this online for free by accessing our Share Driving Licence service. This service is currently in development but will be available before the counterpart is abolished. The service should be used by both paper and photocard driving licence holders and will also allow you to download a summary of your licence record which can be printed or shared.

Alternatively you can call DVLA and give permission for your driving record to be checked verbally by a nominated person/organisation.

From 8 June 2015, you may wish to check with the hire company what they need to see when you hire a vehicle. If you are asked for evidence of what vehicles you can drive or confirmation of any penalty points, you will be able to request a unique code from GOV.UK which will allow you to share your driving licence details or you can download a summary of your driving licence record. The code will last for up to 72 hours and will allow the hire companies to make any necessary checks. You can also request a code by calling 0300 083 0013. This also applies if you have a paper licence that was issued before 1998.

Not all vehicle hire companies will ask for this information and we advise that you check with your hire company.

Hubby took his code with him at the end of June.  There for two weeks with car uplifted at the airport and he was not asked for the code when he picked the car up so no change in Corfu.  Same as always.
