We booked with Direct Line!
I have diabetes and we have found them to be very reasonable compared with the specialist insurance.
Also we have had to claim once for a cancellation and there was no problem at all.

Good Luck

My husband has high blood pressure also and I have used Boots Insurance for the past two years and found them very reasonable.  Also if you have a Boots advantage card you get the points when you buy the insurance, bonus Big smile so you can buy some essentials of your hols.

I use Iinspop, Norwich Union sister company, I have found them to be the cheapest for me, when you phone Norwich Union press the button for over 70s and they transfare you to Inspop, they give the same insurance but cheaper. I'm 59 and have used them for a few years.

I've just taken out an Annual Policy with Insure and Go for two of us. I'm pleased with the price especially as I had to declare three medical conditions (yes I am still breathing!!  Wink) and the other person one.

What I have learnt from recent experience with other kinds of Insurance is that the attractive offers are for the first year and after that the price goes up - often steeply. It's almost getting to the point where you have to switch every year in order to get a decent deal.

Hi,
I informed our insurers last year that I had hypertension.
The questions they asked where---how many tablets a day are taken for it--A 1
Next question was---have you seen a consultant over it in the last 6 months--A No

OK Mrs--- we'll put it on your declaration and there will be no extra premium to pay!

That was with Ageas.

We have taken out a joint annual policy with Staysure for the last 2 years, and will be renewing with them again soon. They specialise in over 50's and pre-existing medical conditions, in our case, angina, heart attack and Crohn's Disease. Last year our premium actually went down, even though our cover had gone up. I find them very courteous, knowledgeable and efficient, and would certainly recommend them. Good luck.     Moyra

We have annual travel insurance included with our Lloyds Bank account, last year as we were going to be staying in Corfu for 8 months we had a small extra premium to pay.
When Wendy had her accident in April they were most helpfull, passing us to an office in Athens to deal with the doctors and surgeons she had to see.

Ive always insured through Atlas, very competive, like others I take mediction for blood pressure the last 2 years Ive told them it did cost me more, like Flynnmo Ive looked at the Staysure website & might insure through them as Im now over 50, I suppose any insurance is as only as good as when or if you need to make a claim, just make sure you do tell them if you do have any condition though.
The only differance between me and a madman ;is im not mad,

I'm not mentioning any Insurance company names...but I gave a couple of them the full 100% facts about my illness...well to cut it short they wanted more than my Holiday was costing me..LOLLOL.

Just checked another one and they just said "sorry we can't cover you" perhaps I should go for their most expensive Annual insurance....you know the one with all the stars and all those promises, like insuring 100 year old sky divers and snow bordersSmile

We used WorldFirst last year it cost just over £111 for an annual policy as both of us have conditions that have to be declared.

I usually use a comparison website such as Money Supermarket to do the initial search and then check which ones will cover you and how much extra they charge as it does vary considerably depending on your condition and how stable it is.

I have spoken to people I work with who dismiss declaring conditions "Oh I never tell them I am on tablets"  I must be a bit 'belt and braces' as I would never risk it - if our family didn't have bad luck we wouldn't have any luck at all Wink  Good luck with your search.  Cath

Right, what happens if I was taken ill while on holiday without medical insurance, would I be left to die or would I receive the same treatment that the local people of Corfu would receive?

You would get sorted Bruce but then you would get the bill.
The other downside is if better treatment is available at home you wont get it unless you have over 10,000 euros in your pocket to pay for a Medivac plane ride

Hi Bruce

So long as you have your EHIC card you are entitled to basic treatment in Greece (that is, the same as would be afforded to the locals in similar circumstances).  You need to be aware, that this doesn't normally encompass what we would consider normal nursing care or food - this is expected to be provided by your family

This is, of course, where it gets tricky, particularly if you are there on holiday and have limited access to accomodation and/or funds as your stay in hospital (if that's what happens) may exceed your holiday, so your family may be forced by circumstance to fly home and leave you behind - at this point, there will be no-one to look after your basic needs. The alternative is that they stay with you, but at their own expense and then have to find additional funds to fly you both home when you are fit to travel.

Another factor to bear in mind is that you may need to be repatriated - without insurance you may have to find the funds for this yourself - and specialist air ambulances come in very expensive!

All in all, the insurance is well worth the money.  We have an annual policy - which is just as well. A couple of years ago, Lynn was on Corfu staying with friends and, whist walking in the hills suffered a fall, badly damaging her ankle.  The insurance company paid for all of her medical treatment (privately - so she was dealt with very quickly) arranged for a "fitness to fly certificate", paid for a taxi to the airport as well as for extra seating on the flight home as she couldn't sit in a normal single seat.  Moreover, they also arranged for all of the "special asistance requirements" both at Corfu airport and at Gatwick.

Regards
Martyn

Thanks guys..Just needed to know that if I decided that several hundred pound was to high a price to pay at least I'd get treated fairly.

You never know It may get cheaper when they've taken the bladder out..all the figures were for it still in place.

As that was one of the questions " Has it been removed YES or NO ..I might try the YES option and see what that comes up with, you never know I might get a big discount.

Thanks Again

Bruce

Bruce,
I found when Mr M had his condition, because I had no Actual outcome to give our insurers---1/ He had not had his op yet.

2/  I could not give them any updates of medication etc---there for his condition could not be judged/screened.

After the event--operation over, full list of meds, signed off by consultant  our insurers gave him cover---I think the first year it was £167 extra--the next year  it was reduced to £97 extra--this year I've not checked with them yet, but, I'm expecting it to be reduced yet again.

I would image your insurance is higher than Mr M because of the age differenceOuch

I obviously wanted a price for cover too soon.

Not wanting to be a bucket of water thrower---but, I would think it best to contact your insurers after your operation--then you can give them all the facts---you might need to rearrange you Kassiopi dates for later in the year ---I know you'd be reluctant to do that---

Please don't be tempted to go without cover and rely on the EHIC card---if Corfu General hospital can't treat you---they may send you to Thessalonniki or Athens at your own expense, Maria would want to go with you, where would she stay---a Hotel? Then you would have to pay for---travelling expenses to and fro to visit and take care of you---I know you wouldn't put Maria through that, so please be patient, have your op---get fighting fit and then plan for Kassiopi.

I do undertand how you feel as I've been down the same route as you in 2009.

I have to say The EHIC Card for us has proved to be totally useless.
Don't rely on it believe me. However carry one as a spare. There Good for Standing Hot Drinks ON!!!
Whatever you do get good insurance. It is so important.
Like ALL INSURANCE. You don't know what youve got TILL YOU NEED IT.
Have a safe journey everyone and a happy and INCIDENT FREE experience.

Thanks guys for all your advice which is always good sound advice, but I think I'll wait until after the operation like Maggy suggests, then get a quote.Thumbs Up

And don't worry I'll not be going without medical Insurance.
