Was it just Roda that had the tiny black beetles falling out of the sky this afternoon?

Sounds like Thunder bugs to me. Proper name Trips. They are tiny insects with fringed wings (thus the scientific name, from the Greek thysanos (fringe) + pteron (wing)). Very common around harvest time in the UK.

Yes 'the flying currants' have arrived early this year
They arrived last year in August---millions if them, unless they arrive more than once a year |

Saw them in September last year for one night only in San Stefanos NW. They were just suddenly there when we were having a meal. Needless to say I couldn't get out quick enough.

Yes Trisa, saw them in Sidari on Friday night the 1st of June!
Crawling all over the floor of a restaurant we we're in, but, nowhere in the quantities of last August/September in Acharavi, as there the pavements seemed to be moving!
Look on the brightside they were not cockroaches
I even had to eradicate them from my dinner
Locals told us that the currants had come out of the soil in search of water

We first came across them last year at end of August. Never ever seen them before in the 18 years we had been going to Kassiopi. However have just been out for the last 9 days and the little whatsits were everywhere, especially around the lights in the bars and restaurants.

We were sitting outside of the airport on 15th June---not only did we suffer the flying currants, but, the flying ants didn't want to be left out!

Haven't across the flying currants yet Maggy, but last year in Ag Steg NW the flying ants were horrible...I had to fish them out of my wine!

The reports of these kinds of strange occurrences breaking out all around the World seem to be increasing. I guess it's linked to Climate change in some way. Will it be Plagues of Locusts next??

They're not thunder bugs. They are the size of a mini smartie! They are Geotomus punctulatus also known as Cornish Shield Bugs. In the UK they are only found in Sennen Cove in Cornwall. Personally I wish they had stayed there!

I've only just seen these posts about the 'flying currants' which is exactly what they looked like. We were in Liapades in June and for about four nights they rained down on us. I had a salad with currants in one night and I'm sure I ate as many bugs as currants! They didn't bite and seemed to die as soon as they hit the floor. I knew they weren't thunder bugs, too big, so thanks for telling us the Latin name Trisa. Never seen them before in all 12 years of going to Corfu and don't really want to again. But they are harmless.
