Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone knows of a good Indian restaurant on the island, especially in either Gouvia or Corfu Town? For all my love of Greek food, it would be nice to have something spicier on occasion!

I've found mention of the Viceroy in Ipsos and the Koh-i-Nor in Sidari. I think there's also a very good one around the Marina at Kontokali/Gouvia. A few years ago they provided the buffet for an evening art exhibition in the palace garden in Corfu town - and it was very good.
When I'm desperate for something spicy there's always Spiros' on the edge of Paleokastritsa. His 'house special saganaki' starter is a hotpot mix of sausage, onion, feta etc. but fantastically spicy. I'm usually still eating it by the time the main course arrives. The Nagasaki of Saganakis, if you will. |

Hi
The Viceroy used to be on the seafront in Ipsos but closed down a few years ago. Bryn & Chrissie did start up elsewhere on the island but can't for the life of me remember where. I'm sure if they are still around someone on here will post.

Hi,
I believe the restaurant is called Raffles and is near Aqualand. "Raffles" turn left out of Aqualand and it is 100 yards on the right. Sure someone will correct me if I am wrong!

I don't know if there is an Indian Restaurant in the south of the island but we could really do with a good one maybe near Kassiopi!

When in Corfu???
Why is it with people who go abroad look for what they have at home. Like people who go to Spain -- where can I get an English breakfast or wheres the nearest fish and chip shop. The mind boggles. Anyway look out July 6th Roda and all the Greek food and Mythos we can eat and drink.

Hi Gil,
Don't forget that some people are here either full time or for several months, not just the usual holiday fortnight. So yes, they probably want a change in cuisine, just as we in the UK have an occasional Chinese, Indian, Mexican etc.

I always try the local cuisine so in Greece I eat Greek dishes ,in France French. I've tried Indian and Chinese in UK and I'll never go to either country as a result. If we were younger we would love to live in Corfu because we really love the way how perfectly the food is cooked.

Sorry gil, I didn't make myself clear. I live in Corfu and it would be very nice to have the occasional change from eating Greek food every time we go out, just as you probably have a change from eating British food when you eat out in the UK! Personally, I would dearly love to be able to have the occasional Indian meal that I didn't have to cook myself!
It's one of the few things I miss! |

China and India are both so huge that there is a lot o difference in cuisines in different parts. Chinese food in China (anywhere) bears no resemblance whatsoever to that served in UK! Still wanting to get to India and taste the real thing but my son says the same applies there! |

Hi Trisa
No offence was meant and next time I wll look at peoples location before posting. Don't get me wrong there's nobody thats like a chicken Jalfrezi more than me. We have been going to Roda for over 35 years every year and all I was trying to get across is that I can't understand why a lot of people wont go to a place for a holiday unless they can get the same food as they get at home. We do a lot of traveling looking for authentic Greek tavernas. So for those who like their curry in Corfu I will keep an eye out for any Indian restaurants and make a note and post them when we get back.

Mmmmmm wherever you are in the world you can't beat a good curry! Last year one of our Asian friends cooked up some large pots of curry and we took plates of it to all of our Greek friends. They were delighted so I am sure in the right location a good Indian restaurant would do very well.

Well Bryn, who ran first Churchills, then The Viceroy, and finally Raffles, did an excellent job, knew the island like the back of his hand, been here for many years and was pretty astute...and if he had to close down I think I would think very carefully before venturing into the Indian restaurant business!

Thanks for all your input. It looks like an Indian in Gouvia could be just a chimera and a fortnight of curry cold turkey beckons, heh! I guess it's testament to the success of Indian cuisine in Blighty that it's now regarded as 'food from home'...

He was definitely the best Jan. His Thai food was good too! I do think though that it really is a case of location, location, location! We told Bryn and Chris that if they were closer to us we would definitely have gone there more often. It was just too far away. We tried desperately to get them to come up our way when the Viceroy closed but I think the rents were too high. I totally agree with you, (if I'm allowed to say that!), that any venture into a restaurant business, let alone an Indian restaurant, in the current climate would have to be thought about extremely carefully. |
