Hi,

For the last 10 years I have taken my holidays in Corfu, but this year I'm venturing to PaxosSmile

We're staying at the Villa Nikos in Fontana early May, which I'm really excited about.

I'd like to know if the taverna in Fontana will be open during our stay and the taverna/tavernas at Magazia?  Also will it be a feasible walk to Magazia from our villa in Fontana. I do like to have a glass or three of vino with my evening meal, so don't want to use the car unless I have to.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Not answered your post before as I don't have a full answer, but as no one else has replied I thought my info would be better then nothing. I have done the walk between Fontana and Magazia but I can't remember how long it took, it's not short, but not impossible perhaps half an hour, The main thing is is to take a torch, especially if you use the main road as its quite twisty and there is a small drop on one side, also it is used by quite a few cars.  I've got a feeling there may be a 'back road' - the road that O Lilas is on in Magazia and the road next to the basket ball court in Fontana - does anyone know if they meet???  Again I don't know if Dolos is open in early May I know it used to be open in late May, have you tried asking who ever you've booked your Villa with?  I hope it is open for you as the spit roasted meats they cook are very good. There is another place in Fontana opposite the church that opened a couple of years ago, but we've never tried it.  Last year there was also a small shop newly opened in Fontana that seemed reasonably well stocked again don't know if it will be open this year.  Also there was a new Taverna opened on the main road going back towards Loggos just before the road starts dropping down into Loggos, didn't try it so no idea what it is like, but there were always plenty of people there. There is also the Sunset Bar (and they do food as well) at Eremitis which is worth a visit even if just for a drink, again I don't know how soon they open. You would need your car for that journey.

Hope this information isn't completely useless and that you have a wonderful holiday

Hello Kebabx!! With regard to your forum enquiry concerning the walk between Fontana and Magazia.
We walked the route that starts in the Magazia end. This small concrete road goes down through the olive groves passing a few villas. It is very pleasant going down but must admit it gets us coming back up!!! We are from Norfolk where hills are scarce and both the wrong side of 60!
We have parked the car at the Magazia end of this road so cheat a little as it is not right into Magazia itself.
The small road comes out passing the cisterna on the left and the churchyard on the right (if you start at the Magazia end) and the tavernas are just over the road. We found the new little shop that had opened up well stocked.
I am not sure where your Villa Nikos in Fontana is located and if you let it be known on this page, Elaine will come to your rescue as she is well educated about Paxos.
We ended up taking the car in the evenings whever we have stayed as walking home after a large meal up some steep hills was just a bit too much for us. I can understand why you want to walk as we had the same thought but gave in and my husband had to do without his nightcap to drive us home instead.
You would need a torch to do this walk above as it goes through the olive groves and with very few lights.
The main road would take you longer.
If you get The Bleasdale walking Map of Paxos this would be a bonus. Ian gives you detailed routes to walk in his book. They are a very nice couple as we have met them on Paxos.
If I can be of further help, please get in touch.
Paxos is our favourite. However Corfu Town is our destination for a week in September but I am sure to get withdrawal symptoms if I see the Hydrofoil heading south.

Thanks for the compliment Andrea, but I don't quite know every single villa on Paxos you know Wink  I did have a look for Nikos - I presume this is the one - http://www.holidaywizard.co.uk/seeinsidebrochure/Thomson_Simply-Travel-The-Collection-Summer-2012-(December-Edition)/Greece/Corfu/page_112 - but I didn't recognise it from the photo.  However, it's only about 1km from Fontana to Magazia, so it shouldn't be too hard to walk.
I wasn't lost - I was just taking an interesting detour!

Thank you Annag, Elaine and Mickandy for your very helpful information.

Well done Elaine, that is the Villa Nikos we are staying in, it looks small but very sweet.

Hi Annag, I really hope Dolos Taverna is open when we are there. I'd hate to miss their spit roasted meats, my mouth is watering at the thought of it also thanks for the information regarding other tavernas and shops in the vicinity. Hello Mickandy! I've deduced from your reply that if I'm very fit, I may possibly make it back up the hills after a full meal, but looking at my sparrow calf muscles, I think we will be taking the car! I will just have to be reconciled with a night cap or two on the villa veranda, which won't be a difficult compromise.

Thanks for the heads up about the Bleasdale map, I will definitely purchase it so we can find some of the hidden gems that I'm sure abound in Paxos.

Once again thank you for all your helpful replies.

Last September we had a walk around Fontana and just had drinks in the afternoon at the taverna. The food did look good though, I think it was a case of having whatever happened to have been cooked. Our friends arrived before us and the Mum was on her own. No English and they had very littel Greek, but managed to get water and correct coloured wine with much smiling and sign language on both sides. Was lovely sat doing nothing much. Not seen the other one open.

Have you seen shakespears phots of the one in Magazia, must take a trip there. I think the one with views looking across to the mainland is the one near Zakspiti, on the road out od Loggos. Graet views and I hear has great food, can't remember the name, begins with P, the booklet I have has it in Greek letters.

If you have a car venture into Lakka on an evening too, as well as Loggos. Or you could get one of the taxis if you don't want to drive. Just try as many places as you can. Not everyone likes the same ones, but many crop up on everyones favourite list.
