    Posted: 28 Mar 2012 at 1:01pm
Hi,
Due to drive out for my sixth summer on April 10th with Minoan. Booked in December on the 1830 Ancona ferry. Their online booking system now shows April 10th ferry leaves at 1400! Not easy to get there for 1200 and stop half way. Last year when they moved my ferry a day at least they rang me. This year if I hadn't checked the website it looks like I would be arrived 2 hours after the ferry left (along with many others I am sure). I checked the ferry a week ago and it was still leaving at the original time.
Anyone know anything?

Anek did the same thing with me in February, albeit moving from 13:00 to 14:00.   They didn't mention it on their website (the "Sailing Updates" section would be the obvious place!) and I only found out by looking at their timetables. They seem to be a law unto themselves with little thought for keeping passengers informed.

An hour later would be fine but bringing it forward 4.5 hr without telling customers is a bit much. Their website timetable still says original time but if you try to book online then dep time is 4.5 hrs earlier. I'm sure if I turn up at the right time they won't be offering me a free hotel. Anek next year I think.

Bit the bullet and rang Minoan from UK. The Ancona departure has moved to 1400 but they hadn't got around to telling anyone yet. Don't bother trying to switch to Venice as that timetable is unavailable

Had an email from a friend who is going out next week saying that Minoan had emailed them to say their ferry from Venice has been cancelled and they have to go to Ancona instead and the ferry leaves from there at 2 pm. I checked Minoan website to find that our ferry from Ancona on 8 April is now leaving at 2 pm when originally it was 5.30 so we would have missed it! Just had a call from another friend and their ferry has been cancelled from Venice and they were told by the agent that at the moment Minoan are only departing Venice in August. I am just repeating what I've been told. Don't want to start a third world war!

We have a booking with Minoan from Venice to Corfu in May. After reading about the cancellation of Venice online, I emailed them to have it confirmed. We have been offered the Ancona/Igoumenista route with 10% off and free food!! to compensate for the extra fuel and toll charges.
The Venice ferry sailed at 6pm and the Ancona sails at 2pm which means that with our ferry and hotels already booked we won't reach Ancona in time. So we have to completely reshedule our journey and add an extra night on the road, as well as the extra cost of getting from Igou to Corfu. What an inconvenience and I wish we had booked the Anek instead.
We travelled with Anek in January Venice/Corfu and they cancelled Corfu, but they did organise and pay for our ferry to Corfu. A better deal than the extra hundreds of Euros our next trip cost.
The ferry companies charge the same price whichever port you go to, so we lose out and they gain.

I spoke to a Lefkas ex pat on the Venice ferry last year. He had travelled with Minoan for 20 years and they have got worse and worse ever since. Now sitting in Mulhouse hotel half way to Ancona not knowing if my ferry will leave or not having like BBB booked an extra night in an Ancona hotel due to 4h30 early departure. Got email from Minoan only 72 hours before departure to tell me of change, which I had known about for ten days. Not looking forward to UK return in October or back out next year. Mmy family had been planning to fly to Venice to join me on the ferry but can't rely on Minoan not to cancel/reschedule ferry

What a fiasco it all is! We have opted now to delay our departure until June when the ferries run from Venice to Corfu (as our original booking) It'll save us hundreds of pounds and hours on the road. Let's hope nothing get changed!
The last couple of years we have been able to book early for all our trips for the year using the high discounts that were offered. A thing of the past now it seems.

lamdhjoliffe   your family can fly to Ancona as easily as Venice- courtesy of Ryanair

BBB- hardly any extra time need be allowed for driving to Ancona rather than Venice fortunately

My family want to see Venice - not Ancona. Won't do Ryanair either but thanks. It is an extra 100 miles ~2 hrs to Ancona than Venice and road not as good for last 80 miles.

Just to say that there is a good train service from Venice to Ancona if that would help your family.

Personally if you have time the lovely route to take is the autoroute as far as Siena and then the superstrada all the way to Ancona- you can see Florence, Siena, Assissi etc. en route if you have time

Interesting - looking at the timetable from Ancona, it would appear that Minoan have reduced the speed of their ships, from roughly 30 knots to about 25 - in order to save fuel?

Seems a good enough reason these days!

I suspect one of the reasons for switching many departures to Ancona is its popularity with the lorry drivers- the most important passengers on board.

Also I wonder if Venice is tightening up regs. because of the damage to the lagoon, and the city itself, from all the big ships passing through

Would also be interesting to know how many delays getting in to Venice there have been due to fog stopping the ferry going down the canal.  We were held for 11 hours in November and this sort of delay could prove expensive for lorry driversif it occurred regularly.  This could also be a reason for lorry drivers preferring Ancona.

There were a lot in November- the longest I heard of was apparently 36 hours- plays havoc with the schedules, plus perishable cargo of course
