Hi, just had this posted to me on facebook..is it fact?

New Greek Accommodation Tax comes into force 1/1/2018

For all visitors to Sidari and Corfu please be aware that a New Greek Accomodation tax comes into force from 1 January 2018. So for all guests who have booked for next season please be aware of the new tax which will come into force at the beginning of next year.

Pretty much works along the same lines of the Balearic Islands Tourist Tax - you will pay the hotelier direct depending per room per night in euro starting from 25 cents up to €2.50 per night.

Thanks in advance

Yes it's true, however the information that you have posted is incorrect. It is actually from 0.50€ to 4€ per room per night depending on the accommodation.

"The new levy — or the so-called “stayover tax” — will be imposed as of January 1, 2018, to hotels and furnished rooms/apartments for rent and calculated based on the number of overnight stays and the category of the accommodation unit, ranging from 50 cents to 4 Euros per room.

One- and two-star hotels will be charged 0.50 euros, three-star hotels 1,50 euros, four-star hotels 3,00 euros and 5-star hotels 4,00 euros."One- and two-key furnished rooms/apartments will be charged 0.25 euros, three-key furnished rooms/apartments 0.50 euros and four-key furnished rooms/apartments 1,00 euro.

The new levy is part of an austerity package passed by the Greek Government in May."

Do you think this will apply to existing villa bookings with Villa Plus?

I can confirm it does, I stayed in Athens from late December until January 2nd and had to pay the extra tax over the last two nights on top of the agreed room price.
Wake up in a studio with seaview,
go downstairs to a bar with seaview,
down a few more steps to the beach....
yep, seaview again :-)

This tax applies to all villas and hotels from 1st January. Villa guests will have a charge dependant on the key (star) rating of the property.

We had to pay a tax in Italy last summer to the hotel at end of our holiday 🤑 Wasn't a huge amount but still something else to bear in mind when costing.
