Any Corfu guide-book will tell you that on St Georges Day in 1823 a cricket match was played in Corfu Town between the British Garrison and the visiting Navy. The game was subsequently taken up enthusiastically by the local population and that nowadays 11 teams thrive on the island and the Hellenic Cricket Federation is based there.
I have spent the last 2//3 years trying to find some cricket to watch on my trips to Corfu but without success. Last year I travelled to the ground at Gouvia Marina to watch a match that was scheduled on the official fixture list. Start time arrived but no players-no-one turned up the whole afternoon. I have e-mailed various official sites-ie. Hellenic Cricket, Cricket Corfu but to no avail. I have e-mailed a couple of individuals whose names have been suggested as being involved in the game but have had no success.
I have now come to the conclusion that cricket on Corfu is like the Loch Ness monster. People will tell you that it is there but no-one has ever seen it.

Regards to all

Many thanks Elliemay for your reply. What I am really looking for is some insight into domestic club cricket on Corfu-contact with someone who is involved in the grassroots of the game. A person or persons I can contact to enquire if a scheduled game is to take place before I travel just to be disappointed again when no-one shows up.

Regards

Denis

Earlier this year, in May, we sat in the Liston and watched youngsters having cricket coaching in small groups...girls and boys...and it was very well done. Cricket is obviously still important. There must have been at last 20 children taking part and having lots of fun.
and Charlie, Nia and Daniel's Gran too

Thanks to all for your generous and well-meant contributions. However it does not solve the problem of insight into adult domestic cricket on the island. Gymnastikos, Ergatikos, Byron and Feax are some of the clubs involved. Is there a league structure? I understand that all adult games are played at Gouvia Marina-The Liston being reserved for children. Does any-one have a contact number or e-mail for a league or club representative?

Hi Denjo,
If you can contact this man. Anastasios Manousis, you might find out more, as he was the captain  of Greece in the matches below. Good luck

There are now eleven cricket teams in Corfu: Feax, Byron, Gymnastikos, Achilleas, Kerkyra, GEK, Ergatikos, Nafsithoos, Laodamas, Dekathlo and Atlas.

Why not Google the teams to find a contact Denbo?

Thanks Elliemay--have googled all clubs until my google finger hurts but to no avail. I was given a possible cricket aficionado in Roda but e-mails remain unanswered. Will keep trying over winter when perhaps people will have more time.

Regards

There is also a pitch (of sorts) in the Ropa Valley.

Incidentally there was a cricket tournament in one of the Athens stadiums recently- the league there is made up of teams of immigrants mainly from Pakistan and Bangladesh.

I assume the contact in Roda was Alex. He will be very busy at this time of year with his bar. However you might be able to make contact via Facebook using the Drunken Sailors page.
