A report on Corfu is being repeated this morning that paints a different picture, includes a interview with a Arillas restaurant owner

Corfu is not all Luxury Villas and Super yachts. Take a drive up into the mountain villages in the North West of the island and you will see the opposite of that Sky News report and how people are really suffering.

DaveF,
We live in a village in the NW and I can assure you that it is definitely not all doom and gloom.

Don't think the video made it out to be doom and gloom nor did it suggest Corfu is all Luxury Villas and Super yachts

The first few seconds of video images did and that's what sticks in peoples memories.

It may be OK where you are Elliemay, but I was there in early June and know what I and my wife saw in places where the Island Tour coach trips don't go.

We were there for a month from the middle of May and travelled around the island. Liapades, where we stay was much the same as last year. Sharon, from the Kafenion said people looked after each other and shared produce etc. As they had always done. Other villages were much the same, maybe with fewer visitors. I think the islands are very different to the main land. I think. We didn't see a lot of the suffering, but maybe package holidays give people a totally different view. Not always the true story, go independent and see the real Corfu, not the all inclusives and the huge sterile hotels if people think they are Greece they are being deluded..

We travel the length and breadth of Corfu every year and to be honest over the years we have seen nothing change, little stalls on the side of the road selling their wine and olives, it was the same 30 years ago and it's the same now where ever we go we stop at the local caffenions.  we always get a welcome. It's village life nothing will change it. and it will be the same in 30 years time.

We do leave the house you know and travel around all the local villages, have to if we wish to source certain things. The Greek villagers look after each other really well. Even we still get gifts of tomatoes, peppers etc. from them too although they SEEM to have nothing.

I agree Elliemay. Life in Corfu is so different to the UK and many people don't understand how things are. So pleased you understand because you live on the island and l don't think their way of life will change any time soon. Perhaps we should take a leaf out of their book and take care of our old people the way they do.

DaveF- yes people are finding life more difficult in some places- but I assure you that there is no hardship here in comparison with those living in city tenements.  I was also encouraged that yesterday when I went to the supermarket the box at the entrance was almost overflowing with donations for people in need...many more than usual.  Don't mistake a traditional way of life for hardship, not necessarily the same!
