Jenny and I have been going to Corfu since the mid 1980s every year and sometimes twice a year but never venture from Sidari, Roda, and all local places. We have hired a car and want to go to lots of little villages and seaside places North side of Corfu town, anybody got any suggestions of nice beaches, nice restaurants, anywhere really. We are staying in Sidari for 2 weeks from the 1st June.

Why not try visiting some of the resorts on the west coast. Not so busy as some of those on the east coast. In fact the whole of the island has it's resorts that charm visitors. As you are hiring a car, explore the island and be surprised for the unexpected joys the island has to offer.

The temptation is to just shout out you particular favourite place.
But putting my serious hat on, I would suggest you just follow your nose, but when you find a place that looks interesting, instead of just slowing down, stop, find somewhere to sit and take in the atmosphere, have a walk round, whether it be coast or inland village. Don't try to do too much. We've done the flying round all over the place in the past, sure we've been to most places, but still find interesting places we have just passed through previously and found real gems. |

B & W, I agree with you, I also have my favourite locations on the island but do not wish to force them on others. I would like to say if guests have time to visit the island of Vidos and whilst in the area to view the end of the airport runway from Kanoni. Then venture down to sea level and visit the monastery. As a bonus walk along the causeway there and watch the aircraft flying over your head in or out of the airport. You can almost touch them.

It would be a shame not to see Boukari- the lake at Korissia, huge sandy stretch on the south west coast...and the lovely old villages - Chlomos, Sinarades, Varipatades etc. It is such a small island, no need to limit yourself to a portion, thank goodness.
Corfu Town is also wonderful, especially in the late afternoon/evening (cooler, less crowded) |

Sinarades is a real gem, just wander around and see the what I am told is the largest traditional village on the island. They also have a folk lore museum there. Whilst there go up the hill to Aerostrato for a superb view over part of the west coast. If you head a little further south there is the bay at Agios Gordios. A fantastic safe sandy beach with Tavernas and bars down to the waterline.

We love Kassiopi, and all the bays and villages going east from there. We usually also try to drive over to Afionas for a meal and some time down on the beach. Stunning scenery.

Go up to Old Perithia, just beautiful. Bit hairy getting there, but worth it.

Werangels, don't ever be tempted to visit Meteora if you think driving up to Ano Perithia is scary.
I get vertigo stepping off a chair, but the drive up to Ano Perithia is a doddle compared to Meteora. Bob. |

Hi Werangels
Meteora is on the mainland. It is where the monasteries atop the cliffs are.
Hi Daveneil
If you venture over towards Paleoastritsa you could call call at Elizabeths in Doukades. It is very pleasant to sit enjoying a meal or snack whilst watching life pass through the square. Then there's Lakones up the hill from Paleo with taverna Boulis at the southern end of the village offering an amazing view from their balcony and the best dolmades we have tasted on Corfu.

Agree with above we visit Boulis (?spelling) for a bite to eat as you say the view is stunning and the hospitality equally as good, just get nervous driving through when the traffic lights are sometimes dodgy.

Over 20 years to Corfu and not ventured around, WOW what have you been missing? For an exploratory scenic drive you must drive down the west coast from Sidari via San Stefanos, Arillas, Afionas, Agios Georgios north and then over the 'top' and down to Paleokastritsa. Afionas is on the top of a headland and is a real little gem where you can sit in a friendly taverna just taking in the stunning views in 2 directions. (Park in the main street).
Up the hill from Agios Georgios is the old village of Pagi and a visit to sit outside 'Jimmy's', otherwise known as the 007 cafe, with the locals and other visitors. You have to drive through the village to park easily and then walk back. From Pagi drive up the 'hill' (mountain) through Prinilas and on to Makrades from where you can take a diversion to visit the ancient hill fort ruins of Angelokastro situated on the top of a rock. From Makrades drive down the winding road to Paleokastritsa with superb views all the way down. That's one superb drive for your notebook, but I advise you to make into 2 or 3 to get the best out of it! |

My personal favourite drive around that we did was starting in San Stefanos for breakfast, Arillas, Afionas, Ag Georgios and finish up in Paleokastritsa for lunch. Have a walk up to the Monastery and visit the aquarium.
Old Perithia is lovely too and good for a quiet bite to eat. The beach is Dassia is lovely. Lunch in Agni Bay is another favourite but the drive down to the beach is pretty steep, well worth it though! Some of my favourite days have been just jumping in the car with a map, choosing left or right and away we go :)
