Hi all - have hired a motorboat from Sam's boats in Roda a few times in the hope of spotting some dolphins up in the North but never had any luck yet, was wondering has anyone seen any up there, normally go in June.

You would probably have more luck following the fishing boats into somewhere like Kassiopi, they sometimes follow them in

My Husband and I stayed in Kaminaki in June of 2011 and we rented a boat and went North. We did cross a pod of 3-4 Dolphins that day just swimming around. I wasn't expecting to see them so it was a wonderful treat! Good Luck! Hope you get to see some while you are there!

Think more likely to spot them in the Corfu channel than open sea as they often follow fishing boats and ferries.

We spotted a pod of about 6 off the bay in Kalami in Sept 2013. It was just as the weather was changing to rain, so we wondered if there were going finding somewhere sunnier?

I have seen the dolphins in Kalami on a few ocaasions and they are definitely a very special sight.
The most memorable was actually in July when in a boat heading for the water sports pontoon. A group of around 8 dolphins including very young surrounded us. Amazing but very unusual for the time of year. So hope you are lucky. |

Sadly, I've never seen dolphins to the north of the island; often we see them off Sayihda (mainland) or in the channel between Corfu and Paxos. The best sighting, though, was a group of three sperm whales heading north between Paxos and Corfu - one passed directly under the yacht! Martyn |

Martyn I am convinced I saw a couple of small whales out towards Albania a couple of years ago but my family laughed at me. Maybe I was correct - they were definitely too big to be dolphins.

We have spent the last eight summers in Greece. From our experience the best time to see them (and even then not guaranteed) is September. I think they come to feed on all the sardines which have been breeding. Typically we see them 2-4 times a year. I remember talking to someone on Paxos who said in the 70s you could sit on the beach watching them play all day.

Sue A few years ago, Nathan posted some photos of whales (I forget which species) in the Corfu channel opposite the tavern. So, whilst unusual, such events are not unique. Regards Martyn |

And there was that whale beaching of the west coast a couple of years ago that made the press. Definitely out there, just not many.

In fact one of the best places to see dolphin is in the bay towards Sagiada (small port on the mainland, parallel with Corfu Town).
The sea shallows quite considerably here and so is a regular feeding ground. Martyn |
