On the way to Lixouri coming from Argostoli, we noticed that the tower of the church of KOUROUKLATA is broken. It's bending dangerously like the Pisa tower in Italy. We noticed also another house that was completely broken in the same village. Otherwise, we didn't notice (no longer) damage on the island.

"Does any member have any up to date information as how the island is recovering from the earthquake damage. I am aware that they are still suffering from many aftershocks on a daily basis. Will the island be in a fit condition to welcome visitors now the tourist season has started?"  In reply to this question: I have lived here for 23 years and stay in Svoronata. We had a couple of stronger than usual earthquakes in Jan and Feb and loads of aftershocks. Since end of April it has died down dramatically where we now get the odd tremble which, to be honest, I do not even notice anymore and only know about it when somebody asks if I felt it!  As for recovery: Most of the damage in the winter was in Lixouri region affecting older houses which will probably take an age to sort out trying to get compensation etc. The other problem is road damage in the area above Myrtos on the coastal road to Assos which means there is a traffic diversion which takes longer to get to Assos as you have to travel East coast to West coast going down to Assos from Vassilikades. I work with Agni Travel with villas all over the island from Fiscardo to Lixouri and they are all fine. For our guests the earthquake has had NO EFFECT whatsovever apart from road diversions. It may be possible that you have read we are suffering many aftershocks but first of all the word suffering  is not correct, maybe experiencing. But this is like experiencing ripples in the sea after a ferry boat has passed by. Business as usual on Kefalonia EVERYBODY WELCOME !!

Only small number of Cephalonia buildings set for demolition

Just 2.5 percent of buildings on the Ionian island of Cephalonia have been slated for demolition by state engineers so far following damage suffered during two large earthquakes on January 26 and February 3. The engineers, however, warned that almost every building they inspected that was illegally constructed or had unlicensed additions suffered extensively in the two quakes

Infrastructure Minister Yiannis Chrysochoidis was on the Ionian island on Monday to be briefed on the progress of inspections to buildings and infrastructure, such as roads, ports, marinas and the airport. He headed a meeting of high-ranking government and local authority officials, who said that from January 27 to February 10, a total of 4,026 buildings were inspected in the Cephalonia towns of Argostoli and Lixouri, adding that inspections were also carried on the nearby island of Ithaca, which was also rocked by the quakes. Of these buildings, 42 percent were deemed temporarily uninhabitable and need to undergo extensive repairs. From February 10-16, inspectors carried out the second round of checks on 1,579 badly damaged buildings finding that 30 percent can be inhabited pending repairs, 62 percent will require major reconstruction and 8 percent will have to undergo a third inspection before being possibly demolished. Of the 122 buildings that will have to be inspected for a third time, 40, or 2.5 percent are destined for certain demolition.

From a friend that lived in Los Angeles, aftershocks are good as they release the pressure build up. Hope that the pressure is not still building and these poor people get a respite from it.

Numpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Numpty Dumpty had a great fall. All due to several earthquakes???

It seems that the number of aftershocks and severity is reducing, let us all hope this trend continues.

Scary stuff - thank goodness the Greek authorities now insist on earthquake standard when building. It is a lot of steel and concrete but when you see what damage it prevents well worth it. Also worth mentioning that many building insurances do not cover for earthquake damage so check your cover now if you have a property overseas.

Cephalonia hit by 4.5 Richter quake
A quake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale shook the Ionian island of Cephalonia on Wednesday, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute. The tremor’s epicenter was located 11 kilometers northwest of the town of Argostoli. The Ionian island has been hit by dozens of aftershocks following a 5.8 Richter quake on January 26.

Yes, without a doubt we do send our most sincere best wishes to the people of Kefalonia. We had a lovely holiday on the island when the children were younger and didn't mind coming away with us and before we found our lovely Kassiopi on Corfu. While we were there it was very exciting because the filming of Captain Corelli's Mandolin was taking place. Lovely happy memories for us and our friends who we go on  holiday with every year. We certainly hope that on this occasion the experts fears are not going to come true.

Kefalonia is still getting many aftershocks, some of them are quiet strong. This morning there were 2 off the west coast of the island. The first at at 04:34 local time registering 3.6 and another at 08:23 local time registering 4.3. In between there were several smaller events. Due to the number of events in a short period of time some experts still forecast that there could be a "Big One". Let us all hope that this is not the case. I am sure that many forum members, regardless of their island allegiances, send their best wishes out to the people of Kefalonia.

Aftershocks continue to shake quake-struck Cephalonia

Aftershocks continued to shake Cephalonia on Friday with a 4.1-Richter tremor hitting the Ionian island in the early hours of the morning.

The island's buildings and infrastructure have suffered serious damage due to strong earthquakes over the past two weeks.

Apart from providing shelter for islanders who have been left homeless due to the quakes, authorities have been scrambling to repair widespread damage in a bid to ensure that the island is operational ahead of the tourist season. The island is one of the most popular in the Ionian for foreign visitors.

Associated Press have reported that tents have been erected to house homeless, and portable classrooms are on the way, as the school buildings have to be checked again for safety.
There's a long report on yahoo news.

Cephalonia declared a natural disaster zone

The Ionian island of Cephalonia was on Monday night declared a natural disaster zone after it was hit by two large earthquakes on January 26 and on Monday measuring 5.8 and 5.7 on the Richter scale respectively, as well as by dozens of aftershocks in the 4-5 Richter range.

Crews from the Technical Chamber of Greece and the Ministry of Infrastructure were midway through assessing buildings on the island that suffered damage in the first quake - among them schools, hospitals and a nursing home - before Monday's tremor.

The general secretary of public works, Stratos Simopoulos told Kathimerini that by Sunday some 1,800 buildings had been inspected on the island and that 750 of them were deemed dangerous.

"We will now have to inspect every building all over again, even those given the green light," Simopoulos said. "As far as Lixouri port is concerned, where the problems became worse [with Monday's earthquake], two experts with experience in port construction will be arriving on Tuesday to assess the damage."

The military will also be sending frogmen to inspect the underwater damage suffered at the port.

The Infrastructure Ministry, meanwhile, said that it will be providing residents who are currently sleeping in their cars, at public buildings deemed safe and on two specially dispatched ferry boats with temporary housing in the form of prefabricated and mobile homes, as the weather seems to be conspiring against the quake-hit islanders with low temperatures and rain.

Government authorities as well as church and citizens' groups have also started providing food and other aid to those whose homes are uninhabitable.
