Well we went to Paleokastritsa, saved no money whatsoever (if you remember we were budgeting this year), had no transfer problems, flights on time, first drop off on the shuttle transfer and all at a civilised hour, 7 hours door to door.
We had a great time, Paleo is a lovely resort, a stunning view at every turn, numerous easy to reach beaches with lots of sandy bits!
Quite a few bars to chose from and lots of Taverna's with nice food, but... I couldn't help but compare everything to Paxos!
I know it's not good and maybe a bit small minded when Paxos is the only other Greek island I've been to but I do find comfort in familiarity and I do think we've been spoiled.
The water wasn't as warm and not quite as clear, the taverna's were fine, but they were all a bit samey in their offerings, the bar's don't give you nibbles!! Disgraceful Wink
Anyhow, we'll probably go back to Paleo because there was nothing wrong with the place, and I have to say that opening your windows onto a balcony that overlooks the sea was amazing, but it's just not Paxos.

Hi Nardine

Paleostritsa is a beautiful spot, but it won't match the small intimacy that you enjoy on the small islands like Paxos - and yes, I guess that you (and many others) have been spoilt - me included.

Being on the west coast of the islands, the water will never be either as clear or as warm as the east coast (or enclosed bays, such as Lakka.  Firstly, there is much more sand on the west coasts, which gets stirred up and clouds the water;  secondly, the water itself is so much deeper and fully exposed to the prevailing wind, which means it will never really warm up.

Go independent, book either Bastas room only, or one of the other room only places in Lakka, then flights at a time when you want them. Booking transfers is easy, you know where everything is now.

I'm just waiting for the Ryanair flights for Spring Bank then will see where to stay! Looking at the White House possibly, or back to one of the Routsis ones again.

Hi Martyn, yeah I had weighed all of these things up and I knew what to expect, I'm just bleating really Embarrassed

Tina, I don't think we can book Bastas independently, looked earlier this year and there's no option on the website anymore.
When we went into Corfu town we were dropped off by the old port and I made a mental note of the Flying Dolphin office by the new port. I'm a bit panicky about it all though, we've had such a tough time getting there with a travel agency I can't help thinking that with my luck it can only get worse doing it independently, probably being silly!

Nardine. Go ahead and book independently. I have been doing this for many years and for all kinds of different holidays. You will have more choice of options. Tour Operators limit what they offer due to price as they have probably had to block book ferries and transfers in advance which means very little flexibility. You have the advantage of knowing where you want to go and the different options available. Go for it!!

Nardine you can still book room only, put Baristas in search on right, then click on book holidays, brings up option of package or room. Only Monday to Monday though.

Booking Despina or hydrofoil is easy. Will pm later with some thoughts/ideas.

Tina
Sorry if I'm being dim but what website am I doing the search on?
Bastas website doesn't have any links to book holidays, I can't see a room only option on Olympic site...

Sorry, it's on the Olympic website for room only option. Couple of years ago we got room for a week for £29pp

As far as I know they will be exclusive to Olympic again next year so no booking direct with Bastas

Aha! I found the page you meant, my mistake was that I was trying to book it via a holiday search from the home page. Stil £29pp, how cheap!!
Next requirement, how do I go about booking tickets for the Hydrofoil?
Then I'll just have to choose whether to go in May, June or September.
Never been in May.
June - loved the lighter nights & later eating but thought the sea was a bit cooler.
September - Sea warm as a bath but nights drawing in and Taverna's closing or appearing to take last orders by 9pm.

Off season Paxos website is the best for timetables. Usual laid back Paxos dates not out till near start of season. Early September is good, places still open as normal. Tend to close near end. Yesterday was last day for Baristas, but they all went on boat Sunday due to weather. I also love June with sea warmer than May.

I'm leaning towards June I think.

I'm considering a Borat Mankini for 2014.
I'm sure it would suit my super trim body!
