Is it me or are the roads getting very dangerous, we have been nearly taken off the road 5 times, by cars overtaking on blind bends or coaches and lorries going so fast that that they have to cut the corners on bends and not slowing down, again nearly taking us out, what has happened, it has really put us off coming again, it's sad as we love Corfu so much but this holiday is leaving us nervous wreaks, are we the only ones to feel like thisCry

Only problem I have encountered is the increased number of foreign numberplate coaches and cars, whose drivers understandably do not know the Corfu roads as well as the local drivers- and will use hazard lights as indicators (that really annoys me!)

My policy is to pull in a bit and slow down. They either slow down themselves or they overtake but at least they don't play cat and mouse with me.. they can do that with the oncoming vehicle. Don't let it put you off

Know what you mean, love Corfu but struggled the past 2 years with one thing and another. Off to Rhodes this year and already booked for Zante next year then see if can relite the kindle after having a break. Missing it already though shame about the last few year,s been going since 1991. Happy hols to all that are going and hope you enjoy

We are staying in Gimari overlooking Kalami bay its the coast road from  Iposs the road is so bendy with lots of blind corners it goes through to Roda, the worstt part is from Iposs to Kalami bay as the roads are not very wide, yesterday we thought our end had come the coach was so far over our side, only by the grace of god I had seen the coach bombing down the hill we stopped but even then he cut the corner so much he nearly took us off the road, and we were well back from the corner, and he never even tryed to slow down, its got us so we don't want to go out now, going to Roda is much better so that is were we will be going from now

The best thing to do Muffy if you feel unsafe with this area of that road is stay well clear of it, because the way these vehicles behave and your fear of being injured or killed is spoiling your holiday...do what you say and head for Roda...I certainly wouldn't drive on a road that did that to me here in the UK or in Corfu.

We have just hired a car hope that driving with it may help, as we have been using our own car up to now, but think we will stay going to Roda, there are no other roads we can use I don't think to go to Corfu Town from here other than this crazy road, while typing this I have heard screeching brakes from speeding cars.

You are right Muffy, from Gimari the only sensible road to Town is along the coast, although we are above Acharavi and use the overland route to Town via Troumpeta, we avoid going to town when ever possible, just hate it in the summer.
Have you tried going very early in the morning when the road is quieter.
Janmanessi, its odd that you mentioned the hazard lights thing, as we have noticed this a lot lately, it seemed to start last autumn, always with Greek plates I have to say, so much so that I recently asked a friends son who is learning to drive if this was perhaps part of the teaching here, although it goes against all logic.

Personally I don't think that this is a new thing. Locals tend to know the roads better than tourists and take more risks (especially if they are young, but this is no different to the UK). We simply slow down and let people overtake us. If a coach is coming towards us and we feel uncomfortable we either stop, or pull in and let it pass.
We've hired a car for the whole of August this year so let's see how we get on. Hope you all stay safe and enjoy your hols!

Mmmmmm - I haven't really noticed the phenomenon that Muffy mentions, but I have noticed that some of the locals in the area where we have our house have started driving quite slowly down the middle of the road - although on one occasion we did meet one on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend!
They may, of course, have been on there way home from the kafeneonEmoticons

As for the use of the "park anywhere lights" mentioned by Janmanessi - yes, it drives me mad too.

We have only had this problem on the Ipsos coast road, but we cant use any other road down to Corfu Town ect, never stayed here before, but will be going back to the Spiti Prifi again next year. Villa is fantastic it's only the road that spoils it.

I have driven this route through Gimari to towards Corfu Town on many ocassions. It is a lovely drive and safe but you have to take it easy. It is different from driving in the the UK and local drivers obviously know the roads better are more aware of where to overtake. Just leave plenty of room between you and other cars and maybe try to avoid Monday and Friday lunchtimes which are busy times due to changeover days in resorts. As Tfg says we should not deter people from visiting. I am sure the roads in the UK are just as intimidating to non-residents!!! Remember the Greek term 'siga siga' which means slowly, slowly Big smile (apologies to my Greek friends if the spelling is wrong).
Beside the sea all worries wash away!!

Mike does drive careful and always keeps close the the edge when going round bends and stopping when he knows a coach or lorry is comeing to the bend, but this coach cut the corner so much and driving so fast he almost took us off the road we had stopped well short of the bend but he had no control as going too fast to take the bend properly

We  have stayed at Kalami and Kassiopi for last six years. My hubby drives, if I had to, we would not leave the airport Confused. He is a very careful driver and we are only there 11 days but can't say we have found it any different. Arriving back at Manchester picked car up, less than an hour to get home, now that was scary. lol xxx

Very scary Muffy and I can understand your fear but please don't let one irresponsible coach driver put you off. Why not take a taxi to Kalami - you do not need a car once you get there as most places are accessable by boat with no stress involved.

Bob have just read your post regarding an overland route. Would this be a road overland towards Paleo?

No, it is the road that bisects the island, right in the middle- Skipero, overTroumbetta, then down to the crossroads at Roda. It does start as the Paleocastritsa road from Corfu Town, but not long after Tsavros you turn right
