Just returned from a little break staying at the Konstantinoupolis Hotel in Corfu Town. The hotel is very basic but it gives you a place to use as a base to explore the town which is right on your doorstep. Our room had a small balcony which overlooked the old port and was a joy just to sit outside and watch the daily comings and goings. We flew with Easyjet from Luton on Tuesday, arriving  just three hours later in sunny Corfu. It was our first time with Easyjet and was a little apprehensive from reading mixed reviews, but this was soon put to rest once sitting in our seats peering out over Luton. The flight itself was excellent and was as comfortable as any other flight we have taken. Landing at Corfu is always an exciting time, looking out over the familiar landscape of the airport. We were the only plane on the ground at that time and getting through the airport was very quick and surprisingly quiet and we were soon out on the other side climbing into a taxi (12 euros to the old port). We arrived at the hotel in 10 minutes, unpacked, and was back out strolling through the old town taking in the sights. Tuesday and Wednesday was very quiet in the town but this changed by Thursday and Friday as a few large cruise ships came into port.
Temperatures were in the mid twenties with the evenings feeling cooler from the slight onshore breeze. It was nice just to stroll around the town taking in areas that we never seen before and finding small Tavernas tucked away offering wonderful food and wine. The Liston was also fairly quiet and had the extra entertainment of the 2013 Cricket Tournament which had a few teams from Blighty. We noticed that there were many street traders offering dodgy DVDs and watches, it’s a shame that the waiters don’t discourage this as it became quite annoying.
The last night consisted of having a nice meal at the Black Cat Taverna whilst being entertained by a local childrens’ band practising their marching and the playing of instruments.
This was our first time making our way to Corfu indepently, would we do it again? Absolutely, especially this time of year when the airport is so quiet and the weather is so much warmer than here at home.
We’re going back in September to Paleo which will give us the opportunity to laze by the pool and to hire a car to explore the lovely countryside. Tongue

Glad you had a good time. Corfu Town is really magical and your hotel is brilliantly positioned to be a base.
There are a lot of DVD sellers around, but many of them are very interesting people. I love talking to them and finding out where they have come from and about their lives- a real eye opener. I can cope with them far better than the beggars.

Travelling independently does give so much more freedom it always surprises me that companies still get clients, I know they are sometimes cheaper though which is a big factor.

Good info Gaz1, I am regular in Corfu and have used the Konstantopoulis before and will be for 2 nights at end of June. As you say great base and lovely staff as well. I am flying from Luton for first time (usually use Gatwick) so the good report of your experiences there was very useful, thanks.

Thanks for the report on your trip to Corfu Town. I have just checked where I have booked for one night in September and it's Hotel Atlantis near the port. Has anyone stayed there before?

best wishes
Terry

Hi Terry,
We stay at the Atlantis every year for one night whilst holidaying in Kalami.
The rooms are very clean with laminate floors, a fridge, air con, good en suite. Great views over the port. Ask for high room to avoid road noise. It's near bus depot and great for sitting outside at night after visiting the town and enjoying a glass or two.
Depending on which route you take it's about 10 minutes from the Liston. We haven't had breakfast here as we love going to Europe Cafe on the Liston.

Hope you enjoy it.

Interesting information - if you can get across town from the airport for just €12, that suggests to me it makes more sense to get to the green bus depot and use them for getting to a distant resort like Sidari, as you know it's going to go straight there, rather than making you wait two hours at the airport for a transfer bus to fill up, then going all the way up the east coast and stopping at every remote hotel and spa they can find along the way. Angry

Also, I'll be doing a transfer in the middle of my holiday, presumably by bus again. Does anyone know anywhere secure (near the green bus depot) that I could leave my luggage so I can go into town for a few hours?

I'm not sure where the green bus depot is, but there's a luggage store at the port where you get the Paxos ferries from if that's any use.
I wasn't lost - I was just taking an interesting detour!

Thanks - that's pretty close.  The bus depot is in the shadow of the New Fortress, behind the supermarket on I. Theotoki.
