I was hoping for some assistance.  My wife and 3 children, ages 10, 8 and 6, are coming to Corfu for one day, we are on a cruise.  I have 2 questions:
Which beach is best, considering I have only 1 day, Kouloura or Glyfada?  Everything I read seems to point to Kouloura/Kalami but I was curious what all of you thought.
How far of a drive is it from New Port Corfu, where we dock, to Kouloura?

Thank you in advance for the assistance and any helpful hints you have would be great.

The drive to Kouloura would take 45 minutes to an hour if you do not get stuck behind a slow lorry.  I do not know Glyfada beach however I wholeheartedly recommend Kalami/Kouloura.  Lovely settings with clean beaches and fine tavernas for lunch/dinner.

Glyfada is certainly a beautiful beach; very sandy.  However, with such limited time I would head for Kalami and Kouloura.  Easier to get to than Glyfada and a beautiful drive on the coast road to boot.

Rather depends on what you like

Kouloura is beautiful but not exactly a beach children would love - soft sand etc It is more shingle with some sandy bits and is very small. It also has shade from overhanging trees and often there will hardly be anyone else there. Plus side is there  are no shops so constant cried for ice cream will be in vain!!!

Gyfada has a huge sandy beach  but  is more crowded but has all facilities

Do a Google search for some pictures and decide from there

Personally I would go for Kouloura but then I don't like sand or crowds and like to snorkel which Kouloura is great for. But then we are not young, both in our 60's

We will only be there for 7 hours.  My kids really love exploring, climbing over rocks and playing amongst trees and that sort of stuff which is why I was thinking that Kouloura may be a better fit than a traditional beach.

You might be right, Kouloura might well fit the bill. There is also very little traffic, not much parking LOL sometimes you have to really squeeze in somewhere

I would say Glyfada is not for you bearing in mind what your kids like doing

Kouloura and Kalami for adventurous kids. You can even drive through Kalami and follow the cul de sac road to the next little bay south of there which is called Yaliskari Bay. Nothing there but rocks and pebble beach. Oh! I forgot about the gatekeeper. There is normally a huge bright green lizard as you near the beach. He hangs out in the corner of the allotment and isn't any trouble at all. He just likes to know who's going by lol.

We visited Glyfada once.  It seemed to be full of nubile young things barely wearing brief bathing attire.  Perhaps we were just unlucky!

On the other hand, this year we'll be having our 11th holiday in Kalami.

Are we there yet?

We stayed in Glyfada in May this year, and really enjoyed the place. A little isolated however the beach is amazing, supposed to be one of the best in Corfu. Waves were even big enough for surfing. Back to A and A this September though for two weeks.

Love Kouloura Beach!!! Was there in May (11th - 18th) and it was very cold all week , but still enjoyed it. Just booked to go back to Kalami in September, staying at Stratigos again. That no.5 apartment really is elusive to us though, all the years we have been going to Kalami and never managed to get apartment 5 yet!!

Hi Rocco, I must agree with the majority, taking into account the ages of your children. Glyfada does have a beautiful beach with strong waves so you would have to keep an eye on the children at all times. There are also several tavernas serving various types of food, from Greek to pizza n chips if you so desire.

On the other hand Kalami/Kouloura is more laid back, each has a smaller shingle beach but has everything you would desire for a day visit. I think the children would have a great time exploring and you would have a more relaxing time knowing they were safe at the waters edge.

Which ever you chooses, enjoy!
