PM Topic: Plants In CorfuPosted: 24 Jun 2012 at 2:04pm |

Hello, We have been going to Corfu for a few years now, and always admire some of the plants both in our hotel, and at the market in Corfu Town. I would love to bring some seeds back and perhaps a cutting or two, but have always thought that I couldn't bring anything like that back. However, someone said to me the other day that you can, providing its from an EU country.
So - does anyone know whether it is Ok to bring a couple of cuttings back (accepting that they may not grow of course - and probably won't but I would like to have a go), and if its OK to bring seeds back, does anyone know where I can buy some seeds in Corfu Town? The good news is I am flying out on Monday for a week, and just can't wait to get back. Thank you to anyone who can give me some advice. Thank you.

We have bought both cuttings and seeds back. The cuttings we wrap in wet cotton wool and both have grown very well

Think you are OK!!!, see below
Be aware though that digging up bulbs and plants and taking them back from the wild may be illegal so stick to cuttings and seeds!!!! From the Royal Horticultural Society: Within the European Union (EU) there are no border checks for plants and plant products travelling between member states and, it is possible, to import and export plants freely with very few exceptions.
The movement of most plant material into or out of the European Union requires a Phytosanitary Certificate which specifies that plants are pest- and disease-free and free of soil. These are issued by the plant protection service of the exporting country. For more detailed information contact the PHSI. |

I have often brought back Geranium cuttings, unfortunately, more have died than lived. But it is the joy of hoping that one flowers which reminds you of Corfu. I brought a magenta coloured one back last year, but sadly it didn't survive. Will try again this year.

Geranium cuttings are relatively easy to root, however, remember they are tender so need protection from frost.
I have found that wrapped in wet newspaper, and by cutting a plastic bottle in half then putting the cuttings inside before securing back together with tape, placed in the centre of the case, they survive the journey home very well. Seeds are readily available from all the garden centres, it just depends what you are looking for. Bob.

HI Bob and Wendy - I didn't know there were any garden centres in Corfu - could you let me know of any near to the town please - I was thinking of either getting a plant from the market, or taking a couple of cuttings from the hotel plants (I would ask first of course). Thanks

We brought some oranges back from the tree in front of our apartment last year and now have 2, 6 inch high orange trees.
Last week we brought a lemon back from the garden and some peach stones so are going to have a go with those as well.

Hi Corfufan,
I don't exactly know the rules about seeds and plant material, but in the past we have grown a pineapple plant successfully. Last year we found two pieces of cacti, snapped them off and they are doing well and have grown 15cm since last September. A friend who grows chillis gave us some and my husband dried them and has now successfully planted them and they are growing too. I do know that in certain countries it is a definite no no to do that sort of thing. Regards, Pegasus. |

I have normally carried the cuttings back wrapped in wet cotton wool or tissues, as invariably I would have one or the other. Then putting them in the outside pocket of my rucksack. They tend to get home safely, but I think with the Magenta one, I left it too long before planting in soil.
Good luck with your cuttings etc. |

Corfu fan.
I can think of one in Kondokali, and I think there is one opposite the airport runway. Sorry, as we never go into Town if we can help it, not very familiar with what is there. Bob.

Once you have seen one garden centre you will see loads! There are two or three around Kontokali on the main road then two more on the main road just past Ebanos and Profi. If you head for the airport from Dassia end you will see all these plus two or three more on the main street before you branch off right for the airport, not sure what it is called there.

Thanks everyone for your advice - we brought a few cuttings back and they look quite healthy at the moment. We didn't have any trouble at all bringing them home at either Corfu or Gatwick, so fingers crossed they will root. If they don't, nothing lost - and can always go back to get some more and try again.

Good luck with your cuttings Corfufan. We have bought back (over many years) several cuttings/seeds from plants and flowers in Corfu. Some have not taken, but we now have a very large Walnut Tree grown from a walnut picked up in Old Perithia, a tree which is now 12 feet high bearing two dozen or more, what look (and taste) like apricots. Another 10 ft tree which we dont know the name of but is very prevalent all over the island, several fir trees (from seeds taken from the cones) and I could go on and on. I might add that all of these have been started off in our greenhouse (not heated) so they all had a good start.

Plants still looking healthy thanks to everyone's tips and advice, and its been 2 months now almost. I will keep them indoors during winter, but here's hoping that in the future they will flower, and we will have some plants to remind us of Corfu. Thing is - we will just have to go back now to get some more...

I brought back about 8 cuttings from a climbing plant I always admire every year and 4 of them seem to have survived and have buds on them.
They have orange trumpet shaped flowers, does anyone know what its called please? Angela |
