We are first time vistors to Corfu and will be staying two weeks at Rossi Hotell in Messonghi. Are there any good boat trips from Messonghi? Any tours to Parga, Paxos or Antipaxos? All tips are welcome! Where to go, what to do, where to eat etc. |

A number of boats do various trips from the Messonghi river, the one I've been on many times is Nick the Greek (blue boat) one of the "larger ones" but they all do various trips so you take your choice? There are too many places/taverna's to mention here, but if you hire a car you could drive down the coast road to Boukari, Petriti etc. again they have good tavernas. Petriti is a small quiet fishing village and worth the trip. As I said too many places/taverna's to mention, but you will have a great time I'm sure

If you do hire a car, I would also recommend a trip to Marathia on the West Coast, it has a lovely sandy beach which is about 2 kms long. Don't go on a Sunday afternoon unless you like disco music as there is a disco at one of the beach bars which gets loads of the local Greek people visiting. Obviously they also want something to do when they are not working, so I am not knocking it, just prefer to warn people about it. The rest of the time, it is wonderful. You may like it anyway.
Also, dont forget to catch the bus up to Benitses, as it is a lovely old fishing village and there are some nice restaurants tavernas there. You will pass through on your way to Corfu Town, which is another must place to visit. From Benitses, you can walk up to the Achillion Palace, a bit of a walk uphill or even get a taxi up from Benitses, it's well worth it and will be much cheaper making your own way than going on a trip. Enjoy and hope you get the same bug as a lot of others and want to return back to Corfu again and again.

Everything that Gerry P said, plus for a lovely Greek meal in a wonderful beachside location, simply wander along the beach from Hotel Rossis to the far southern end of the Messonghi beach to the Bacchus Taverna. At night time the atmosphere is magical. Enjoy! |

Wazzer, I've stayed upstairs at the Bacchus as they do rent rooms, on many occasions and always enjoy the atmosphere there Taki (Demetrie) does really good food, so it is a good suggestion. Also I like the Barino bar mostly English people but great atmosphere.

Blimey Gerry, I thought I was the only person who had ever stayed above the Bacchus!
We stayed there in mid July last year and had a great time. We never go to the same resort twice, so we are off to Boukari this year, but we will go back to the Bacchus for a meal and say hello to Yana and Dimitri.
Wazzer.

Thanks for all the great tips. We will definitely try some of them. Does anyone know the best way to get to Chalikounas Beach? Can you bike there or even hike??

Mirador, I have driven from Mesoghi to Halikounas and would think it would be too far to hike in the heat. Biking should be possible, the territory is pretty flat. Or you could get a taxi. I second the recommendation to go to Petriti, it's a pleasant beach with good restaurants.
I would also strongly urge you to take the bus up to Corfu town if you've never been. Even if you just spend your time wandering in the old town and having a coffee in a Liston cafe, and don't get to any of the museums or churches, it's charming and well worth the trouble it takes to get there.
