I've always understood it to be "yeeros" with the emphasis on the 'ros'?  I'm sure the purveyors of this tasty little treat will understand you whatever you say!Smile

Definitely not a J! More a Y as Sooz says but with the emphasis on the beginning of the word - Yros.

In greek - Γύρος

Wikipedia disagrees Trisa, according to this.  Greek: γύρος, [ˈʝiros], lit. 'turn') is a dish of meat roasted on a vertical spit.

Definately more of a Y than a J as the Γ (yamma) is sometimes pronounced as gamma in English languange books but is more of a cross between y/g in English. Best way of describing it from my point of view would be 'gyee-ros'.

When we were in Roda recently, we wondered this very same thing.  So we asked an expert - the man who sold it to us!  He definitely said - gee row - no S at the end!  However, Im sure that if you point at the menu looking hungry, they will understand!

Sorry davyboy but Wiki is definitely wrong!LOL It really isn't pronounced as a J! As said before though most places will know exactly what you want!

If you'd like a gyro in pitta ask for a Πιτα Γύρο - Pitta Yeero. If you want it with everything in it ask for a Πίτα Γύρο με όλα. Pitta Yeero meh ola.

Hope this helps.

One last thought... Gyro and Yiannis start with the same letter in Greek - Γ - both pronounced the same way!

Which ever way you wish to say it, enjoy!!Smile

I had a platter one this year, but forgot to go and get a wrapped one later. Too many food options and not enough lunchtimes. Once they know your face, everyone wants to cook something special for you!

I have been told by a Greek friend that it is pronounced hero, but with a more throaty sound on the H like we Scots pronounce loch.
If that makes sense...
