My first post.. although I am a long time fan of Corfu. My first encounter was 25 years ago (my first time abroad)... I was blown away, as I was 2 years ago when I returned with my familiy. A lot has changed but the magic is the same.

Anyway... less of the rambling. We are coming again with a group of 3 other families staying at Thalia Villas nr St Spiridon in June. We are expecting to eat in a fair bit and I was wondering how supermarket prices for food and drink are looking at the moment and how they compare with eating out. I love eating out in Corfu but some of our budgets are on the tight side.

Also does any one have any Supermarket recommendations in the area. We will have hire cars.

Thank you in advance

The nearest large supermarkets are in Acharavi, local mini markets in St Spiridon and Perithia,
Imported brands more expensive than local produce.
Look out for small trucks selling fresh fish or fruit and vegetables.

Hi Razaker,
I think that you mean Lidl not Aldi. Smile Don't think that there is an Aldi on Corfu.

Costs compared to the UK are a lot more expensive to shop for everyday items especially if you buy English or named brands. Go for the Greek brands and it will be a bit cheaper. A few years ago there was a group of about 12 of us and a few times we cooked in and  I managed to produce a fairly decend spagetti bolognese salad and fresh bread on two electric rings and a microwave and probably only cost about 12 or 15 euros to buy from the supermarket, so it is sometimes cheaper to have a few nights in especially if in a larger group. There is a supermarket on the right as you first come in to Acharavi the name is escaping me but its fairly near to the Chinese clothes shop and its a bit cheaper than the other supermarket that is further into town, that one has a bit of a captive clientele as its within walking distance of a lot of the apartments so seems to be a bit more pricey. Also there is a little shop on the right as you go out of Acharavi towards Roda called Tutti Frutti and just sells fruit and vegtables at more reasonable prices than the supermarkets, we always get the donkey carrots and apples in there and he always give us some extra when he knows it was for the donkey sanctuary. Last year it was only mr jules and I so really wasnt worth the effort to cook in the apartment so even though it was a struggle (not) we decided to eat out every night!!Tongue

Also if you want a quick snack or cheap dinner if you drive in to Acharavi just past the roundabout thingy on the right hand side you will find a little place called Pacman and they do lovely gyros and souvlaki chicken and pork, sometimes if we have had a late lunch and cant manage anything dinner wise we nip down late at night for a naughty gyros!!! Roll on June.xHeart

Hi Julie...Welcome to the Agni forums.

Here's my advice for what it's worth....First night there eat out at one of the great restaurants then the next day buy your food for your next meal from the supermarket...weight up the cost between the two..and then make a decision.

Don't worry by anything we may suggest because which ever you decide on it will be a great holiday..and one last bit of advice, if you do decide to eat in most nights make sure everybody has a turn at cooking and it's not just you.Thumbs Up

There is a Sconto in the main square/ crossroads in Kassiopi and we have always found their prices to be very competitive, also they have a large selection of fresh and frozen meats.

I am sure you will have a great holiday with a crowd of like minded friends,

There are only 2 of us, and depending what we eat, it is usually cheaper to eat out, unless you take things like salt, pepper, dressings etc. We bought everything for a Greek salad, feta, salad, olives, bread, olive oil and compared to eating out it was nearly double. Its the extras that add up, and then lots of it gets thrown away at the end of the holiday, but if there more of you this may not be the case. Enjoy whatever you do lol Ann xxx

When we were in a large group with a lot of kids and watching the pennies we had the no fizzy drinks rule, sounds a bit harsh but we found that you could actualy spend a fortune on cokes and other fizzy drinks so instead we used to have 3 or 4 large bottles of water on the table. Fizzy drinks were overpriced and also fairly useless at rehydrating you after a day in the hot sun. I might sound a party pooper but on some holidays we had 6 or 7 kids in our group so 2 x cokes per child at 1.50 or 2 euros each adds up.Beer

There is also a wonderfull bakery in Acharavi and if your off out for the day you can pop in for some rolls or crusty bread and make a picnic to take out with you. Toiletries, suncream and mozzie repellant is also quite pricey in the supermarkets so take plenty with you from home..julesxx

Thanks for all the replies and advice, the comment about making sure I am not the only cook made me laugh. I think you must know me already as that is what usually happens... although that is probably just my inner control freak manifesting herself .

Can't wait to get away.... roll on June.

Thanks allClap

Kassiopi which is just down the road (about 12 km) has plenty of good supermarkets which will cater for all tastes but only you can make the descision about eating in or out but what ever you do just enjoy your holiday

Oooh, looking forward to finding the Pacman! I hope we are able to eat out each night as I think it's part of your holiday - hoping to find out soon how the prices are when people report back. Pleasantly surprised a couple of years ago that main courses were about 7-9 Euros and that was in Kalami.

Hi Corfugirly,
As previous replies confirm there are a lot of supermarket options in the area but also some cheap eating out options. My particular favourite and excellent value for money is Tzelatis (commonly referred to as Spiros) in Perithia, only a few minutes drive from the Thalia estate. Spiro and family are the friendliest of hosts and super generous - you always get complimentary dips and bread, bottled water and very often dessert! You will also nearly always get a free nightcap. And more importantly great company interesting locals. There are also a number of places to eat and get a drink at the beach in Aghios Spyridon itself - most notably the Ammos pool bar - once again with the friendliest of families in charge. Whatever you will have a fabulous time - we will be in Perithia for the half term week in June so may well see you in Spiros!!!

The supermarket on the main road at Kassiopi used to do very reasonable priced made up fresh chicken souvlaki which were a lot cheaper than any taverna and easy to grill or barbeque, that coupled with some salad stuff and some fresh bread made a lovely meal

Chicken is cheap to buy to do with what you will

Wine in the big 2/3  litre plastic bottles is very cheap and palatable unless you are a wine expert

Beer and spirits are still cheaper than buying them out by a long way. Mixers, Greek makes, are available and very cheap compared to big brand makes. Greek cornflakes sold in plastic bags are OK too, they look different but they taste fine!!

We always go for Greek branded stuff in the supermarkets but it is still more expensive than the UK, Butter and cheese are expensive. Fruit an veg are fairly cheap so long as you stick to the local stuff grown in season. Packets or herbs are also cheap and you take home what you don't use, sets you up for the rest of the year

We always make our own breakfast, the very large litre  tubs of  sheep and goats milk yoghurt are cheap and we have that with fruit or honey plus fresh bread and jam

We also make up our own lunches, sandwiches if we do not want to go back to the accommodation, or a simple tuna salad and bread if we eat on the balcony (buy the Greek tuna not Princes or any brand you recognise, it is half the price

We also sometimes buy cheese pies or cheese & spinach pies at the bakers and heat them  up back in the apartment for lunches or even an evening meal.

We also always take basic ready measured Indian spices in little packets  with us so we can knock up an authentic curry if we want to. We buy the garlic, peppers and chicken or something locally along with the rice

Have to admit we normally eat out in the evenings

Hope that helps a bit

Thanks for all the tips, Ammus pool bar looks good and we hope to get up to Perithia too so will try Spiros. Has anyone tried Pyramid in Saint Spiridon?

I just can't wait!
