Returned from a few days in Kalami and appalled at the amount of rubbish obviously not being collected. What is happening. If it is strike action how long for - it looks awful.

Funny you should mention this as it had been building up for several days before we left on Friday. More noticeable on drive to airport ... Must be a treat for vermin 😁 Asked Thomson rep at airport if there was a refuse collection strike on and she seemed to think it was because of the two days of storms they had earlier in week? And there was a backlog of collections because vehicles couldn't get out ... sounds very dubious to me.

Our neighbour said it was something to do with the landfill site being full?
Not certain if it is correct but certainly looks awful and smells worse.
I hope they get it sorted out soon.

We brought some friends out for the first time last week. They loved Kalami and everywhere we took them until the drive back to the airport. It was embarrassing and very smelly in parts particularly between Gouvia and the airport Embarrassed

There was a similar situation when we were there in May. Rubbish piled at the side of the road from the airport to Ermones.

I also heard that the dump site is full and a new one isn't operational yet. Hope they sort this out soon as both the sight and the smell aren't exactly advertisements for the island.
Wake up in a studio with seaview,

down a few more steps to the beach....
yep, seaview again :-)

The landfill site is currently illegal and has been for some years. Like everything here however nothing is simple. If its deemed to be a health hazard for Corfu when the rubbish hills become too much we shall see where the stuff goes.... As for the Temploni site it is further complicated by having some rather strident relatively new incomers wanting it shutdown as it affects their new build properties.

Hi All,
I have read on other forums that there is an island-wide rubbish problem. Is there any truth to this, and if so is there any solution in sight?
Thanks
Jim

Yes at the moment it is a big problem, however certain areas are doing their best to keep it under control. The locals are up in arms too, but slowly some of the rubbish is being collected. I won't even bother to say what the problem is as there are so many rumours, conspiracy theories, my mate told me etc.

Thanks Elliemay.
It's a real shame. Hope they can find a solution soon. The Corfiots are so warm and hospitable it must be really painful for them to have this problem coming into high season.

The rubbish is gradually being collected but it is not a good look for the island. The landfill has been opened for a limited time to cover the tourist season but certain areas are still very bad and smelly (one area in particular actually made me heave). They need to sort this quickly as it was definitely a health risk.
Drove from Corfu Town to Kalami this morning and although definitely much better there are still some inexcusable mounds of rubbish.

Oh dear, it's been about 4 weeks now since it started building up (when we were there) people in UK would be demanding a rebate on their council tax ... don't suppose it works like that in Greece 😞

Sue Avrio - what is the rubbish situation in Kalami itself? We are coming on Saturday. Is it busy? It was fairly quiet when we came out for half term at end of May.

From what I have seen, most of the immense piles have been collected. Drove from the airport yesterday and to be honest did not see the piles that we saw a week ago. The bin men are working all hours to try to get it sorted.

Drove from Avlaki to Corfu Town on Tuesday morning, saw bin lorries at work, also a large truck and digger tackling one of the larger piles.

There were a couple of large piles in Kalami village on Sunday, one near the payphone, but hopefully these may have been cleared by now.
