Still a sight for sore eyes sadly, worse in some areas from drive from airport...some areas looking themselves like landfill sites. Occasional empty bins but a big shame they are unable to clear in other areas 😫

They are doing the best that they can. Unfortunately the rubbish increases dramatically during the season. More people = more rubbish. Yet just the same crews to clear it all that are employed during the off season. No money, so no temporary employees.
There are many local initiatives to move the rubbish away from the resorts, but it still has to be stored somewhere before it can be collected.

I understand completely that the rubbish increases with tourism but this has been ongoing for far to long and is the same every year. I have had several regular guests who have decided not to return this year as they feel the situation is unhygienic and the stench in places unacceptable. It is not the fault of the bin men who are understaffed but it really needs to be addressed before it has a huge impact on tourism which is so important to the island.
Beside the sea all worries wash away!!

I completely agree with what Sue says, the mountains of refuse left for weeks at the side of the road is simply not acceptable. A solution to the problem seems a long time in coming, but until one is found the reputation of Corfu as a beautiful holiday destination is at stake.

The owner of villa we are staying in said the locals got together and dumped rubbish outside town hall as a recent protest. Apparently government money for waste collection is being used mainly in the town and not outlying villages πŸ˜–

The rubbish was being dumped behind green screens all over the island as we witnessed on our jaunts this summer. Awaiting removal.
Keep taking your, take a holiday in kassiopi pills.

Yes we saw these too ... mind you over the last few days of our holiday towards in September all the public bins around Kass had been cleared, not so much on drive to airport.

Does anyone know if there has been any improvement this year to the refuse collection problem which seems to escalate in July and August in and around the resorts.

Hi, we were there end of May early June and the rubbish situation is quite bad. The bin lorry's are out and about but not collecting rubbish as they have no where to take it, they are just spraying it with some sort of disinfectant, the smell from it is quite bad. So the piles of rubbish by the side of the are just getting bigger and bigger?

Thanks for your reply.
I was hoping a solution would have been found for this summer, but from what you say the situation is just as bad as in previous years.

They are collecting the rubbish. The reason that it built up is that there were demonstrations at both Temploni and Lefkimmi re the landfills, so nowhere to take it.
However there has been a decision made that the rubbish will be baled in Temploni and then sent to Lefkimmi for storage.
The riot police from Athens have been present to ensure that this will occur.
There are also quite a few local initiatives taking place.
A company has set up collecting food waste from restaurants for composting, Spartilas has an organised recycling facility that is secure so when recycling is taken there it is sorted correctly.
For up to date news on the situation, rather than listen to local gossip etc./Chinese whispers take a look at this news page by Enimerosi.

Thanks Elliemay for bringing us up to date with the refuse collection situation. It is good to hear that a decision to take action has been made. There has been reports here in the UK in the newspapers and worried holidaymakers have been have been contacting their travel companies about this problem so it is good to have a reliable source of information.
The disposal of refuse is fast becoming a major world wide problem for many countries and for small islands like Corfu it is especially difficult. These new initiatives are great ideas, let's hope they make a difference.

I have just read on the link Elliemay gave us about the Green Point which is happening in Kassiopi to recycle plastic and glass. The location of which is the basket ball pitch (not sure where that is, can only think of the football pitch between Kassiopi and Imerolia).

We have recently returned from our family holiday in Kassiopi and all had a great time, but we were shocked at the extent the rubbish situation had reached. A temporary solution that most villages seemes to have adopted was to remove all bins to the outskirts of the village. Kassiopi's refuse was being dumped in the area opposite the football pitch, on the road after Imerolia. Rubbish covered a huge area, spilling from behind the wire fence to the roadside. We saw diggers starting to clear away parts where it was falling onto the road. The smell when driving past was very bad.
Whilst travelling round the north of the island it was a similar situation. Fires had broken out in some rubbish dumps.
We were conscious that we as a family of ten were creating a lot of rubbish and adding to the problem, so we hoped to be able to at least recycle all the plastic water bottles we used, but the recycling bins in Kassiopi were far too small for that, and obviously intended just for the disposal of waste as people walked around the village.
Reading the reports from the link Elliemay gave us, the situation hasn't improved much since our return.
We have been regular visitors to Corfu for many years and we were saddened to see what is happening to the island. Let's hope a solution can be found ready for next season
We are back in October so we shall see.

It continues to be a sad and frustrating situation for both the residents and visitors to Corfu ... we as a couple have the time and inclination at home and abroad to be very conservative with how we dispose of waste and can only ensure we do our best to help as best we can. It’s what happens at the other end of recycling which is out of our control.
